Both iPads come with A8, moooaaaaar RAMs, Touch ID and full laminiation of display and front glass panel. Given that iPhone 6+ was rumored to delay till 2015 but turns out to be launching alongside iPhone 6, I don't think Mini would be updated later. The most important bit among all is full laminiation.

I hate seeing dusts trapped between the panel and the LCD.
:/

I personally would love to see the same camera system as used in the iPhone 6+. I know Apple likes putting 2 gens old camera tech in the iPads, but whenever I go to big events like weddings these days, there are people taking pictures with iPads, so it seems silly not to improve them.

But as others have said, I expect we will see 2GB RAM, along with the A8 and a 6 core GPU (the iPhone 6 has a 4 core version to save power). They will probably keep the 16GB version, but get rid of the 32GB version, so you just have 16/64/128.

more and more it feels like they may not upgrade the mini due to poor sales.

My personal to 3 wishes are:
-thinner/lighter
-Address the limited color gamut issue
-2GB Ram

Just recently sold my Mini Retina so that I can purchase a new and hopefully much improved mini Retina 2. I guess we'll know soon!

I am probably their biggest rMini user/fan. In addition to what you mentioned, I truly hope that they upgrade the speakers to where one can even hear them. I'll be upgrading my mini anyway but it would be nice to have those additional features.

"Nobody wants 32g"

Said the person that doesnt think anyone will want a 5.5" iPhone.

Most Likely:
Speed Bump
Touch ID
Slightly improved camera
Gold Option

Hopeful:
Size and Weight of IPad non Retina 1
2 GB Ram with multitasking
NFC

I think these are pretty realistic expectations right?

I think you're pretty spot on. And I also hope that the size remains the same. Not this Apple "and it's even .4mm thinner this time!" crap. Because changing the size (or width) will render many existing cases and peripherals incompatible.

I hear you. The retina mini was by far my most used Apple device last year. It was really tough to sell it....but, I got a good price and I'm ready to go when/if they release the new one this month. The 6+ has been doing a reasonably good job of filling it's shoes in the meantime.

In order of importance, here is my take on the improvements I would like to see in the next GEN mini:

1) Address the gamut issue. I may be in a minority on this but to me it's a real weakness in the current mini's.
2) More RAM: Current ram really limits multitasking. Constant Safari/ other refreshes are a big drag on productivity.
3) Other display improvements: Decrease in reflection & increased brightness.....to make using outdoors in bright conditions easier.
4) Thinner and lighter: I'd be happy if it returned to the size of the original Mini. Smaller bezels would be nice.
5) Better speakers: Front facing speakers top and bottom sure would be nice.
6) Touch ID & NFC: I travel with the Mini on business....would be a nice feature.....not critical though.

Not sure how many of the above we will see. I'm assuming the Mini will be faster, have a camera upgrade....so I'm almost taking these as a given.

Items 1 and 2 In the list is are deal killers for me if not addressed. It's going to be tough to plunk down several hundred dollars ($600 + for the cellular model I'd likely buy) and have to deal with these issues for at least another year.

Are iPad Mini sales poor or just skewed towards iPad Air? I haven't seen the numbers either way but I see plenty iPad Mini's in the wild.

I'm sure Apple will announce an update for the iPad Mini. At the very least it's easy enough for Apple to update the processor, touch ID and call it new. Maybe a bigger update will be announced with a delayed release date.

apple doesnt breakout those sales. but yeah doing a small bump like MBs and MBAs may not be too much effort. but they have done a ton this this year already

As thin and light as the original mini. It makes a significant difference when you're using it for long periods of time. Transparency not necessary :)

A 7% weight (23g) and 4% increase in thickness (0.3mm) between non-retina - and retina minis makes a "significant difference"? Yeah right. I call BS.

A truly significant weight and thickness decrease (= > 20%) would indeed make a big difference. But I'm not sure they will be able to do that until the A9 with its (rumoured) 10nM process. It should result in significant energy savings and they can decrease battery size. I'm not sure the A8 will make that much of a difference... Happy to be wrong though! Maybe they've managed to make the backlight better, or glass thinner or something...

EDIT: and a top-of-the-line camera would be nice, especially in the mini. Unfortunately Apple is never going to do what they did with the iPhone and have a protruding lens on the iPad, because people use those flat on a surface all the time, and the wobble would be untenable. So pick one feature: upgraded camera, or thinner iPad

Multi-tasking feature and more RAM to support that. With iPhone 6 Plus big as it is, iPads should come with some features that distinguish them apart from phablets, especially iPad Mini. Multi-tasking seems like the logical answer.

If they're redesigning the iPad Air even slightly, odds are they'll do the same with the iPad mini. While 2GB is possible on the next iPad Air 2 (by virtue of the full-sized iPad traditionally using a different chip than the contemporary iPhone/iPad mini at the time [as was sometimes denoted by the "X" in the CPU name]), odds are the next iPad mini will have the exact same CPU as is in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which means 1GB of RAM for the mini. TouchID is likely. NFC, I couldn't say. Improved cameras would be nice, but I'm not sure in what way they would do so unless to bring the cameras of the iPads up to par with the iPhones and to add an LED flash (not likely, but would be nice).
