What are you talking about? Previous generation iPad Minis did not have NFC. Or TouchID. It is not just software.

The tear down shows the NFC chip is there, but you're not going to be allowed to use it because Apple has largely disabled it for your SAFETY!

There! Does that sound better? LOL

This is one of those things about Apple that just makes me scratch my head, just like Continuity not working on Macs it should, same with Air Drop, etc.
And now Apple Pay.

These are all great features added in software, but none of them are great enough to go out and buy a new Mac! Do they really think this is a great marketing angle in how to deal with loyal customers with machines they don't need replaced.

HEY WE GOT SOME NEW FEATURES, BUT OH, WE DISABLED THEM ON YOUR PRODUCT SO BUY A NEW ONE, NO BIG DEAL SUCKER!

Sorry Apple. I'm just not that gullible, but don't worry. Plenty of people here are.

You don't even know the difference between Continuity and Handoff. Continuity works even on my 2007 iMac. Handoff requires bluetooth 4.0 (guess why?). People already whine too much about battery life, i can't imagine them whining about it even more because of handoff on older bluetooth

You continue showing your ignorance. There is NO nfc antenna. There is no hardware in iPad mini 3 to make it compatible for in store Apple Pay. Do you even read?

So I assume since it was not mentioned, it still has 1GB RAM? That is my deciding factor at the moment if I will upgrade from my iPad Mini 2.
What do you mean with upgrading? iPad mini 3 = iPad mini 2. They literally changed the behavior of only one button.

Antenna is the only thing missing. The CHIP is there. DO YOU READ?

You need the antenna to use it in retail stores. You can use Apple Pay online with just the chip.

You're bending over backwards to make Apple look bad, and you're really doing the damage to yourself.

I think they are figuring that it would not be used very much on the iPad. An rarely used component that would eat in to their margins. I mean, when would you ever have your iPad with you, but not your iPhone (or NFC-capable Android phone)?

People like to gripe just because they can. The former models home button was two sided tape. What does it matter if it is a industrial hot glue method??? Even your all mighty Android manufacturers use this method. I think Droidboys post on here all day just for kicks.

If it was made in Sweden it would be glued, welded, machined and screwed into place, and then surrounded with plywood framing and a few rivets would be added just to make sure, along with a staple, then covered with tape. The iPad would be designed and built around the button so each and every individual part of the iPad would have to be completely disassembled to be able to barely reach it. A replacement button would cost 39 cents, but to remove and replace it would take the entire weekend and leave your entire body a twisted, sprained and bloody mess. You would be skilled in toolmaking after the experience because no tools for disassembly would be available for sale, rather you would follow the instructions that come with the replacement button to make custom tools from scratch with metal bars and a file. Same crap display panel.

Yup, that's one of the reasons I'm typing this from my new iPad Air 2 (in portait mode) instead of on a new iPad mini 3...

That, and well, everything else that the mini 3 should have been but isn't...

Aaaahhhh...the good old days...

It's interesting that Apple would choose not to include the NFC antenna on the iPad mini 2. I see people with these things around everywhere including in stores while shopping. I'm sure it's due to cost or they are probably holding off until the iPhone 6 does it's rounds as a test. Who knows. But still.... they added the chip and couldn't add the antenna? $4 or $5 in parts plus license fees or whatever. Doesn't make sense. What gives Apple?

I'm a little dissapointed that only the iPhones get to play the Apple Pay game as I don't want to deal with the carriers. Since they have the security for it I'm guessing the Air 2 and Mini 3 will be compatible with Apple Pay when paired with an iWatch?

Well of course Apple is the true evil. They will use

There is a flaw in you logic.

First in many cases the new "software" feature requires the presence of a hardware which older devices might not have them.

Second they did not disable any thing on the loyal's customer machine because it was not there in the first place to be disabled and so the customer still has what he paid for in the first place only with a newer software which gives this hardware anothe year of useful life and this is something you rarly see outside of Apple Eco system. In fact there are so many people who buy now hardware that is running a software more than 2year old and they have no way to upgrade which means they are fooled into buying an obsolete product out of the box. Who is the gullible now?

Third as a company which needs to keep their customers they need to add new features to their newer devices which is the case in any business. If a customer finds the new feature required for his case then he will buy the new device otherwise he will still use the one which he currently has.

This explains why the iPhone 5S can't use ApplePay for in-app purchases despite having TouchID. It needs the NFC chip for "secure element".

Apple touted that the A7 in the 5S has a "secure enclave" to hold fingerprint data. I haven't heard this mentioned since the iPhone6 and the A8 came out. Is "secure enclave" still in the A8? Or did this move to the NFC chip and merge into "secure element"?

The secure enclave is part of the A7/A8 processors which are Apple products. The secure element is part of the NFC chip which is an NXP product.

I do not believe they can merge that otherwise they should have incorporated in the A8 chip.

I fully agree with you, despite the "slight" exaggerations you've made... But, let's assume you have a bad accident with your former SAAB (or VOLVO) and a similarly bad accident in a Chevvy or Toyota. Which car would be safer to survive?

As an engineer I've always respected the Sweedish or the British hardware technology compared to the American, in the past or as of today!...

But, alas, we're talking about a "consumer grade product" which is expected to be thrown away as soon as it starts malfunctioning and to be (inevitably) replaced with a new one!!!

Exaggeration?!? I take it you never tried to replace a heater core in a 900. Or that damneble detent spring for the gear shift that actually did cost 39 cents. I thought it was weird the guys behind the counter asked me if I had ever replaced one before, then started chuckling. Haha....grrrr... I made multiple tools from scratch. The rear hatch compartment was glued and stapled wool felt over the best damn quality plywood I've ever seen in my life. Trying to drill holes in whatever miracle metal that car was made out of destroyed countless drill bits and gave me some understanding of what "Swedish Steel" actually meant. No part of that cars design and engineering resembled anything else on earth. It's a shame GM finally did them in, but on the other hand Saab really did themselves in. They failed to keep up with the times and pay attention to the changing desires of their customers and were instead resting on the laurels of their great achievements of the 70s and 80s - just like Apple is behaving today.
