The hood
So the iPod touch prices kinda squash these rumors. I honestly think it won't even exist anymore. The only logical price would be $399, and who the hell would pay that when they could get a full sized one for $50-100 more?

I guess there's a market for everything, how else would you explain midget porn and Bronies?

Why would you buy an iPhone when you can get an iPad? Same principle applies to price.

They'll drop the iPad 2

$399 mini

I was hoping for 299

That $399 price point is for the previous generation iPads. A mini iPad was always a longshot, but after a $299/$399 Touch refresh the chances are about nil. They're also not about to have a mini iPad and a 3rd gen iPad competing with one another at the $399 price point next Spring.

Well they have 4 ipods competing with each other already

3 macbook sizes competing with each other

2 iphone sizes

they can justify the mini

I was an iPad mini believer. But i may have made the foolish assumption Apple would want to market it on price and portability.

But if it comes out, I see them charging a premium for the portability and it likely costing $399. (I agree old models will be phased out.)

At that point it goes from a 'non brainer' to a 'not so sure.'. The rumored 3G nexus will get a long look from me. I just want a content consumption device for business travel and it'll meet 90% of my needs.

Apple just made the Nexus 7 and Amazon's Fire HD models more attractive. I can't see a $300 Touch vs $350 iPad mini in the market.
A $400 iPad mini vs a $200 Nexus/Fire HD is a bad mistake. They should just scrap the idea to save themselves the embarrassment.

Why? Why do the iPod touch prices have to affect iPad mini prices?

Would Toyota price their mid level Corolla and a mid level Camry the same? It's just common sense that a manufacture will not compete against their own models.

a 4" touch at $400 compared to a 7" Fire HD or Nexus 7 at $200

the touch is bound to fail

Uhhh... I don't think the devices are *that* comparable. I wouldn't want to buy an iPod touch (I have an iPhone) and the iPad seems a bit too big for me.

I don't get how the pricing for the iPod touch tells us anything about the pricing of the iPad mini.

Ah, car analogies! I don't think they are both "cars" though. As I said I'm not interested in a touch, but I would be interested in a mini for example. How are they competing with each other?

It's funny you mention that......

It would seem strange to sell a 7.85" 16GB iPad at the same $299 that they're charging for a 4" 32GB iPod Touch. If it even exists, its' certainly not going to be $199 like the competing 7" tablets.

$299 is the perfect price IMHO for the base model iPad mini

16GB

and $399 for 32GB

Why are you assuming that the specs will be the same?

I could see it being $299 for 8 gig and $349 for 16. That would provide a significant different between the Apple. And it would be very Apple like to command a $100 premium over the Nexus/Kindle Fire.

(And there woud likely be no Retina screen, newer processor, etc)

I'd never seriously looked at the nexus. But after the somewhat dissapointing announcement today and decreased optimism in a mini, I did some more research. It's a pretty sweet little device.

If they release a 3G model in October as rumored, I'll jump.

To the contrary, these numbers make MORE sense than what I've seen and could work...some may want portability and sacrifice screen real estate but gain 16 more GB storage for $299 and some prefer the larger mini but sacrifice storage for $299... Seems a fair trade off to me

And for Apple, competing doesn't have to mean identical price points...they will gain a lot of potential buyers of the $199 tablets for only $100 more to get an apple...I think anyway

Why would anyone buy an ipod touch in this day and age. Several yrars ago yes when no one even contemplated mini tablets. Iphone users wont buy it and the nexus 7 and amazon tablets are way more bang for the buck. I was shocked when they announced bs upgrades for the touch. That thing should sell for 179 tops. my 16 gb nexus 7 was $250. Its as good as my ipad 3. And far superior to that dopey touch.:D
