Why would anyone buy an ipod touch in this day and age. Several yrars ago yes when no one even contemplated mini tablets. Iphone users wont buy it and the nexus 7 and amazon tablets are way more bang for the buck. I was shocked when they announced bs upgrades for the touch. That thing should sell for 179 tops. my 16 gb nexus 7 was $250. Its as good as my ipad 3. And far superior to that dopey touch.:D

I agree. The Touch used to be an entry point into the Apple ecosystem for apps, music and gaming. It seemed like the primary market was preteens, Tweens, teens. But as the iPhone moved from a luxury device to a primary device (especially with the $0/$99 iPhones expanding the youth market) it seems like the Touch had passed its time.

From a gaming, app and media content perspective the 7 inch form factor is superior. The only upside is portability.

To me the iPod Touch seems amazingly overpriced.

I think the 64gb Touch is for music lovers. I could see myself upgrading my Classic to the Touch for more space. I also have the 64gb iPad 3 and iPhone 4S, but don't consider them my music machines, although the phone does have a lot of music. But anyway, since I don't compress my music files I need all the space I can get.

I have a Sansa Clip+ with 40GB of storage. It cost, what, $50 and has fantastic SQ. I'm sorry but none of the iPods are even remotely a good buy right now. That pricing needs re-thinking.

I love the iPod Classic though, that's better bang for buck than these stupid flash storage iPods. They are far, far, far too expensive for the storage you get. And really who wants to carry a 4" iPod and their 3.5"+ phone? Do people actually do this? I struggle to fit my Sansa, wallet, phone and keys in my front pockets as it is, the Sansa is tiny.

I wish HDD players made a glorious comeback, because Apple don't allow microSD their flash storage players are terrible value.

edit: talking strictly about music, I can see the iPod Touch being good value if you are serious about games and videos on the thing, I myself don't like touch games very much and rarely play any on my iPad or Android.

Remember on the boards everyone thought that Apple wanted to make a mini tablet to break through to the entry level Kindle and Nexus customers?
Well now the the touch being starting at $299, there is absolutely no chance that the iPad mini will be $199... We already should know that.
Now the debate is if you think the mini would be if Apple would price it at $299, will it work? One of you said the devices aren't comparable, but cash value can always be compared in the average consumer.
On the other hand Tim Cook is the authority in supply and chain, I personally think he minds canibalization as long as Its in the iOS ecosystem.

But mark my word No -$299 iPad mini on 9/12/12 by wesk702

Here's a mind blower.. the iPod Touch IS the iPad mini! Think about it? It's just a 4 inch iPad really. There isn't room in between the 4 inch and regular sized iPad due to the prices Apple is charging for the Touch.

I don't see them configuring anything they can sell for $299. $349-$399 for 16g. No 8g tablets...

While I agree with you that the iPod Touch could be called a 4" iPad, I don't think you can say it replaces a 7.85" iPad Mini. Even considering the pricing angle, they are still attracting different markets. You're flipping the earlier argument which said there wouldn't be an iPod Touch refresh this year because the iPad Mini would replace it.

As multiple posters have said, you can't easily put a 7" device in a pocket. The reason people buy the 4" iPod is that it is as close to an iPhone as you can get without paying the iPhone data fees, or the price of an unlocked iPhone to use as an iPod. Yes, the Touch should be cheaper, but it isn't as expensive as owning a smartphone with the same specs, along with the added fees. (I know Europe has different rates. I'm addressing the US marketplace.)

I don't know why Apple is so reluctant to add the same option the iPad has which is the ability to pay a carrier by the month. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because people are texting more and talking less. The cheaper Touch could threaten the more lucrative iPhone.

As for pricing, I had hoped Apple would drop the Touch by $50. I never expected Apple to release an iPad Mini for $199. Even cheaper component parts don't support that. I expected it to retail at $299 for 16GB and $399 for 32GB. And if I'm right about the pricing, if a product line is hurt, it will be the same priced Touch, not the Mini.

It will probably be 349-399 now. So much for 199, which is very doubtful. Apple wouldn't sell it that low.

I think apple is a bit confused on its price points. I am disappointed by no 8gb gen5 touch, instead you have no choice but to drop $300 on a 16gb. You have devices that easily eclispe each other only to be better in aspects of memory or size. What the point of a new nano if you can get a gen4 touch for $49 more? If the ipad mini can't get close to $300 it will semi fail at being competitive in the 7" market.

Yea I don't think apple is trying to help anyone but their pocket books. For a moment I really Thought a 199 249 iPad mini was gonna happen along with the rest of you. Around this time I was also thinking the lighting/30 pin adapter was gonna cost 10 bucks or 3 for 30 too. Well, the fact I just dropped 30 bucks for ONE adapter also tells me apple is trying to make money. 299 8/16GB iPad mini if we are lucky.

And for those who don't think the iPad mini isn't real.....your stupid. They leaked not only the iPhone 5 parts but also the mini parts. All these leaks have been stone cold on the mark. The iPad mini is real.

Out of curiosity, isn't the Classic larger than the Touch?

My bad. Since I have 'em all,l I got confused. I was hoping for a 128g Touch to buy. The classic remains available for $249 and would be a better deal and meet my needs better.

Apple's marketing is based on the "if we build it they will come" philosophy only in their case, it's "if we make it they will buy!":D

There is no iPad mini and there shouldn't be.

The 7 inch market is for cheap tablets. Apple ha no reason to even think about joining that crowd.

Just because you dont want one, doesn't mean there is no market for this product.

However, Amazon and Google have shown a market does exist but the price point is the sticking point. Apple may not want to play the same game. Indeed, as the market leader, they probably don't have to play it. Their dominance can probably command $100 premium and still people will be happy to pay.

However, we are now left to work out the markup will be $150 to $200. Suddenly, that's not quite so appealing.

Things will probably become clearer in a month... it either gets announced then or it doesn't get released this year.

Given the amount of part leaks for the iPhone, wouldn't there be similar now if an iPad mini was going to be released in the next few weeks?

I'm not sure whether to wait to see if the iPad 3 gets the new connector and any improvements. I guess it would follow that apple would wait for the iPad 4 to do this (they didn't roll out thunderbolt to all mac laptops out of cycle so I guess they may not do this with the lightning connector).

There have been parts leaks though, rear shell, Lightning innards etc. alongside the (higher-profile) iPhone 5 leaks, which given the latter's accuracy, preclude this from being just another rumour.

The iPad Mini is coming next month, I'd bet my mortgage on it.

It's 32Gb. It's starting at 32.

According to Apple's logic, doesn't this right here mean a $100 premium over a 16gb device? Maybe then $300 is not so bad for a 32gb ipod touch? Also, maybe the iPad mini will start at this same price point but only be 16gb or even only 8gb.
