256 is $499 instead of $549 too

These rarely go on sale, though they have a few times, so if you were in the market I would say now is as good a time as any

Happy iPad'ing !

edit- doh this is on front page. feel free to delete mods... or keep it if you want for people that don't browse front page news often but may be after a deal idc

Hmm, trying to decide between 64GB LTE @ $480 (~$535 after tax) and 256GB LTE @ $630 (~700 after tax).

Good choice on choosing cellular. Everyone has different needs but an iPad with no cellular connection isn’t worth it to me. I’m not around Wi-Fi 60% of the time I use it.

I’m not sure if AT&T still offers it because of them getting serious about abusers but AT&T postpaid has a $20 unlimited plan. I still have it and they won’t take it since I have it in my iPad.

Lol, I'll be putting it on the T-Mobile $10/5GB/5 month plan. Just a case of better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Only my primary iPads are on normal plans (2017 Pro 12.9 & 10.5). Still on a grandfathered shared GB plan because moving to unlimited will increase my rates by $80/mo (or $960/yr plus higher taxes on top).

I’m curious. Why not just tether the iPad ? if you have att basic unlimited it’s only 15 bucks more for the next tier (plus you get other stuff) that offers hotspot. Savings there plus the extra cost of LTE.

Think of it this way, how likely are you to enjoy using your smartphone if it didn't have an always-on internet connection?

If you use the iPad often in areas without wi-fi, tethering every single time after it disconnects is annoying. I don't think Apple has gotten persistent personal hotspot working properly yet. For me, the iPad gets much more use than the iPhone so having to tether every time is a major hassle. Having built-in cellular also allows different carriers on iPhone and iPad for better coverage.

Another advantage is when there's a power outage. I can continue using the iPad for casual browsing and entertainment while conserving the iPhone's battery (and Li-ion battery packs) for emergencies.

Ive always been a wifi only model iPad user... I always get the smallest capacity too

Tethering on demand works for me, but I use my iPad around the house most often and when not at the house, on some sorta public wifi

but I understand where LTE strapped radio would be handy

Right before these went on sale, I finally found a good deal on a 64GB cellular model. It was an Amazon renewed, but it was only $419 (tax-free) and looks flawless. Only downside is that I wanted silver and it was only available in space gray, but worth it for over $100 off full retail.

So glad I got it, too. My iPad mini 4 is almost painful to use now. I can’t believe how long I put up with that device. This thing does not lag at all.

Ok just trying to get a sense on why some choose to go the LTE route. For my use case the added savings in just tethering is my best option. Only thing I have to do is toggle the hotspot on. I usually have a high capacity power bank with me so battery has never been an issue. Cheers.

Yeah, and I'm just explaining why some of us who use iPads as our main device go for LTE.

Just think how inconvenient it would be if every single time you use your phone, you had to manually connect it to wifi.

If one doesn't require the latest and greatest model, I've seen the LTE models at just $50 more than wifi during clearance sales. Iirc, the 512GB LTE Pro 10.5 was just $600-700 during Prime Day past year. As long as you don't stream a lot of music and video, there are cheap plans available for iPads (e.g. T-Mobile $10/5GB/5 months pay as you data pass or Google Fi tablet SIM).

Was so tempted to get this, but I have 4 iPads (iPad 1, 2, iPad Air 1, iPad Air 2, and the incredible iPP 3) I don’t know if I would even use it that much. I bout an extra iphone XR for simple task that require a smaller device (instagram taking quick reference photos, etc, etc.) If my first paycheck from my new job isn’t too horrid, I maybe will consider it a little more, lol.

You're the iPad man 'round these parts. I love my duelies. Does it feel a little excessive? A bit.

*But I get plenty of use out of both for different uses cases. My mini is my 'real' tablet and my 12.9 is a permanently strapped ASK 'play' computer that I can get a lot of checking up on stuff done.

Surprised how well its humming along too for being three years old and a spotlighting backlight. Never any touch issues.

my Pencil doesn't get much use for either, but I bought it years ago now pre-dating the 2017 12.9 and it still works great and looks cool with my wooden slickwrap. Good to have around. And good to have one pencil for two tablets , given how little I use it overall

I have Verizon cell phone service because of cost and reliability. However, Verizon cell service at our camp is poor, even with a signal booster. I also have the cheapest data plan, the 2G one (with 2G bonus data, plus rollover), which works for our phones (seldom away from WiFi and not used for surfing the web or streaming) and cellular trail camera. However, that amount of data would not be enough if I were using the iPads (either using my phone as a hotspot or adding the iPads to my Verizon plan).

It’s cheaper for me to have two cellular iPads ($35/month each for unlimited data, AT&T) than it is for me to use my Verizon plan data because I’d have to go to a much more expensive unlimited data plan, plus I have decent AT&T signal at the camp and awful Verizon service.

I don’t care about cellular on my iPad Pro as I use it at home 99+% of the time, and the few times I will take it out, I can just use the hotspot from my phone or iPad mini.

However, 99+% of my iPad mini’s use is away from home and it would be extremely inconvenient to have to connect to my hotspot every time I wanted to use it. Plus GPS.

This isn’t how it works anymore. I bring my WiFi iPad with me now and then and it just automatically tethers to the phone whenever I start using it. Really convenient!

That's how it's supposed to work on iOS 13. Sadly, there are still bugs and it doesn't seem to work for everyone yet (myself included).

Besides, when connection speeds are marginal, it helps for each device to have its own dedicated connection.

I’ve used that feature a couple of times. It usually takes just as long to automatically connect as it would just manually connect, and you also aren’t getting any notifications on your iPad while you aren’t using it because it isn’t connected to the internet.
