Does anybody happen to know whether the iPad Mini 6 and Air have the same logical resolution or not? Or in other words, does the Mini have the same usable screen real estate as the Air, but simply shrunk down?

Yes.
Here are the technical specs....
iPad Mini 6 : 2266 x 1488 @ 326 ppi
iPad Air 4 : 2360 x 1640 @ 264 ppi
UI elements like buttons and sliders are indeed shrunken.

Thanks for the link. It's the point sizes I'm wondering about rather than the pixel sizes. It's kind of hard to find the details on that as it seems all the sites which list point resolutions are yet to be updated (which I guess is fair enough for hardware that's not out yet!). Going by the detail on that page you linked though it does seem like it's going to be the case with the new 8.3" display as well though vs the current Air display.

I’m pretty sure they’re both 2x so half each resolution dimension to find number of points.
So, I think the Air 4 will show more content, but not by much. Clearly the mini will therefore have smaller UI elements.
Interesting that the iPad mini 6 has a lower horizontal resolution (in points) than any other iPad mini (or iPad in general) before...

Am I the only one who wants the UI of the iPad mini to be bigger? (ie: normal size like the other iPads and iPhones)
The main reason I still haven’t pulled the trigger on a mini is because the buttons and the default font size are too small. Sure it would fit the same amount of content as a regular sized iPad, but the interaction just feels weird to me. It’s also giving me more eye strains with the smaller buttons and texts.
On webpages, it’s easy to increase font size. But there are many apps that can’t change its UI font size like YouTube. I feel like I have to bring the iPad mini much closer to my eyes in these instances.

Not me. My eyesight is still good enough that I’d prefer a smaller, more densely packed screen.
I always make the system font size as small as it will go on all my devices. I’m so excited about getting my mini and being able to see pretty much as much as I can on my 10.5 Pro, but with a much easier to hold tablet.
that’s not to say there aren’t cases where bigger screen helps.
