My iPad Mini 6 has suffered from keyboard lag since new. I exchanged the device because the first one did it too. I’ve since been down to the Apple store and the display models do it as well! What gives? I’ve asked this question here before and people reply incredulously that their iPad is fine and mine must be faulty etc.

In certain apps the keyboard is fine, the App Store for instance but Safari is frequently a lag fest with especially the space bar not being registered whilst typing. What causes this on an app by app basis? It’s something I would expect from a cheap Chinese tablet or a 7 year old iPad running a newer version of iOS that it can’t handle. I’m on 15.7.1

Most likely just a lot variables when it comes to responses from folks. Do you have a screen protector on? Do you have a case on? Do you have large hands where your palms might be hitting it? Maybe how you are typing/holding on the device is the issue? Does it happen in landscape & portrait mode? What other things are you doing that causes issues? Update to iPadOS 16 and try.

These are the variables, if not more, but the bottom line is if it doesn't work with your situation and you've already got a different one then maybe it wasn't meant to be.

I think this is a lack of RAM thing. In certain light apps the keyboard zips along but heavier apps slow it down. Multitasking two heavy apps at once slows the keyboard to a crawl. I had a YouTube video playing in Safari and the FB Messenger app running together on the same screen. Typing in Messenger was slow and some key presses weren’t registered at all.

There is no longevity built into this device at all if you can’t even type properly on it 12 months and one iOS 0.0 update after launch.

*Edited to add:

Typing in Chrome is marginally faster than in Safari and especially when multitasking with another app open on the same screen. Turning off keyboard clicks removes a lot more lag for some reason and is absolutely necessary on the Mini 6 if you want to type at a reasonable speed. With the jelly scrolling too this is unacceptable in a device which is currently for sale and for a hefty price.
