You wanted a retina diaplay, you got it. $399 for retina, aluminium, 8 inch tablet is an okay price.

That sounds like the keynote. They said we wanted it so they have it to us. Of course we wanted 32 gb standard too.....especially for 400

Essentially the first iPad mini was a smaller iPad 2, I think that the price reflected that. The iPad mini 2, is essentially a smaller iPad air (5), it makes sense to me that the price would reflect that.

To be honest I'm not sure why people in the US are complaining considering how much more we hBe to pay for items here in the UK and other parts of the world.

True that.
Pricing before sales tax after conversion in USD is higher in Europe compared to the USA. So higher sales tax is not the reason nor the translation fees

so to sum up:

A. The price of the first the iPad and the new iPad Air have remained the same even though the latest iPad is equipped with a retina screen, has a faster processor, added camera, and is lighter than its predecessor, etc.

B. The price of iPad mini soared from $329 to $399.

Are these good enough reasons?

1. retina display! :)
2. same components as iPad Air packed in a smaller size!! :D

I don't understand why you're trying to find a pattern with the pricing. This isn't a law of nature, or an experiment that can be repeated. Apple prices their products based on factors that we don't know. It's unlikely that they're working off of a fixed equation, or a fixed algorithm. They did one thing in the past, and they're doing a different thing now. Stop worrying about the fact that their actions are not the same.

If you dislike the price of the retina iPad Mini then don't buy it. Wait for the refurbished models, buy second-hand, or don't buy at all. Stating your discontent here is pointless.

Dude, I own plenty of Apple products, but when geeks and Apple fundamentalists make statements like this it worries me and makes me think some of you are delusional living in la-la land.

And where are the profits?

This is the thing I don't get about analysts, business exists purely to make money. Who gives a damn how many devices brand x,y, or z is moving when the vast majority of the profits are coming from a device thats being sold less?

Who is the "winner" in the market, the guy that moved 100 products and made $10, or the guy that moved 3 but made $100? From my view marketshare is just a stat that analysts can get a hard-on for because it's meaningless when someone else is eating your lunch.

Let me start off by saying that I'm not trying to "troll" but just stating the facts. I'm buying the iPad Air and own many Apple products. Simply stating my opinion.

Well priced? Yes, it has a 64-bit processor, i'll give you that. But, the Nexus 7 is nearly half the price with a better screen with more quality. (Yes, it's .9" bigger but I pretty sure it isn't worth an extra $200.) Yes, the app ecosystem is better, but again, is it really worth that extra $200?

Honestly, I thought Apple planned Retina with the $329 price point in mind (I thought that was expensive until I thought of this.) IMO, $329 is the sweet spot for the iPad Mini. You pay a little more for the ecosystem, the bigger screen and the overall experience. But an extra $70 for Retina is way too much.

Also, I feel that regular consumers will opt for the last generation iPad Mini as they often ask "It does basically the same thing right?" I don't think they will drop another $100 for a better screen and processor especially when they compare it with the Nexus 7 and other competitors (which they will, they aren't biased as we are.)

I agree ( from the iPad mini Poll thread) :D

That price is ridiculous! You have a smaller product, the screen is smaller which should cost less, not more.

This is a terrible idea

I'm starting to accept that such advice doesn't help. That all the answering and explaining in the world doesn't solve the basic problem.

Apple worked very hard to create desire, a product they now want, while simultaneously creating an obstacle (price difference). They feel caught between these two priorities, are upset at apple for making them choose, and need to share those feelings.

It helps to keep in mind is that irrespective of their choice, they want the iPad more. If they wanted the alternative more, there would be no pain to complain about.

/thread. ditzy wins.

have to agree

I'm a big fan of apples products as well (Powerbooks and macbooks, iphones 3g, 4 and 5 and a couple ipads), but this increase for the screen was a bad move. yes I know it has the a7 as well but still. The full size iPad didn't get a price increase when it went retina (I know because I bought one) why should the little guy? If they at least bumped the low end to 32GB (where it should be now) the blow would have been softened a little.

Repeating what has been written a ton already in the thread.

iPad Mini 1 - small iPad 2, cost was $70 below the equivalent full size iPad 2
iPad Mini 2 - small iPad 5 (Air), cost is $100 below the equivalent full size iPad 5

Had Kept the pricing structure the same for the iPad Mini2, it would be $430 ($70 discount from the equivalent full sized iPad) but instead gave you a $70 discount.

I think next year or Spring what you will see is the the following

iPadMini2 - $300
iPadMini3 - $400
iPad5(Air) - $400
iPad6(Air2) - $500
iPadMax -$600

iPad max being some sort of large screen iPad.

Come to Canada where Apple is the only company raising prices on technology when our dollar is nearly on par with the American Dollar. I'm sorry, but iPad mini for $419 + tax = $473.47 which is ridiculous. They've raised everything between $20-$100 it seems. Our prices have been the same for years and don't see why they have to raise them all of a sudden and have no explanation for them.

Was going to buy one for the wife at Xmas but due to the price increase she said it was too much and we have gone for an android tablet instead.

That's one more retina for someone at least :)

I feel like if they would've just started at 32 gb people wouldn't be as disappointed

Why should the little guy get a price increase? Well they sold the first one like hot cakes for $329 so I expected an increase because of that when retina became available. And also to be closer in cost to the Air so folks have more to think about for which one to buy. No longer a $170 difference.

some may say greed...but its pure economics. the US dollar is not worth as much as the CAD, EU, pound, etc so if they raise the prices, then it locks in their usual profit margins.

Again 32 gb and people aren't as disappointed. Guess they know with holidays coming people will prolly pay the premium

The unemployed should not be purchasing luxury consumer items. Apple is not a social service.

Pretty much this

If you are stretching to get an IPad mini 2, wait an extra month and they will start popping up in the refurb store. I've made four larger purchases from apple this way, saved enough over three years to pay for a new MacBook Air, and I'm convinced that the refurbs get a higher level of QC than the retail units do.

Hmm ... Mini supplies are probably going to be short. So I think the plan might be:

A bunch of people want an ipad mini for Christmas. Walk into Apple store, no mini anywhere in sight. Sold out, sold out, sold out.

Apple salesman: "But for only $100 more, there's the iPad Air, and it's almost as light ..."

People walk out with an iPad Air, and thus Apple avoids supply issues. By the time supply issues are finally sorted out with the mini 2, it's time for another refresh of the iPad cycle.

So why not simply not manufacture the iPad Mini until there is enough supply for everyone who wants to buy one? Why introduce a product, cause a hype about it, and then, at the end, announce "our supplies will be limited."
