Apple put a larger screen in an iPad that's "roughly" the same size as the 9.7" model. I would have liked them to have kept the 9.7" screen and shrunk the bezels. Hmm..wait a sec! The iPad Mini has been rumored to be discontinued...this could only mean one thing...

A larger iPad Mini with significantly reduce bezels is coming and they're going to call it "iPad".

It's not getting discontinued, it's the redesigned 9.7" (give or take an inch)....and I'm buying one.

I wouldn't mind a larger screen, as long as it physically doesn't get any bigger.

As much is there still is a market for the iPad mini out there and those who appreciate it, I don't think Apple shares those values as much as they used to. Mainly because of how large the iPhone has become an and it's consumed the iPad mini and iPod touch. Ultimately, I think that iPad mini at most would receive a specification update.

Nope.

What you're proposing is essentially iPad Air 3, an expensive media consumption only tablet.

This might have be true three or four years ago when the iPad was still a growing market. The market today is clearly motivated by price. Apple had to use an old non-laminated display and A9 to bring the iPad (2017) down to $329. Apple isn't suddenly going to introduce a narrow bezel 9.7" design and raise the price. That would be called iPad Air 3.

The market clearly isn't willing to pay $399 for a media consumption device. The whole move to iPad Pro 10.5" and 12.9" is Apple trying to rejuvenate the market by introducing new productivity features.

Let's put a little more thought into strategic thinking, shall we?

AiN’T GONNA HAPPEN.

Apple’s baby was always the IPad, the Mini was a nice play but small tablets are pretty much not in demand. Oh don’t say the amazon ones, they are entirely a horse of a different color.

Yep.

They won't need to raise the price much. The market is willing to spend $399. This device would be at the $399 price-point, as other Mini's have been. It would be smaller than 9.7", but bigger than the current Mini.

Even though this is not the best render and is clearly outdated....something with these characteristics would make a lot of sense @ $399.

Apple wasn't going to release an updated "Air", as they didn't want it to compete with the larger 10.5" redesign.

Last year was the iPad Pro (12"). This year was the iPad Pro (10.5"). Next year will be a redesigned iPad (8" or whatever it ends up being). The Mini will be phased out. And if this doesn't happen this year, it will happen next. I'm sure they'll ride the old tech as long as they can, as they did with the iPhone SE. I also won't be surprised to see an all new 4" iPhone this year.

Making up stuff from think air I see. I also see a lot of people here seems to work for Apple. Can I get a job there to?

When it comes out, I'll bring this thread back from the dead.

I only work for Apple on the weekends. The rest of my week is spent responding to comments on MacRumors.

Plz get me a job at Apple since you work there and know so much.... Seriously though unless you do work there all this is baseless rumors that you think can happen. The tablet market is a slowly dying one being consumed by bigger cellphones.

To be serious if you don't work at Apple all this is rumors with nothing to back it up by some dude on the internet. So you can think this could happen but it's all an opinionated rumor of what you might think Apple is doing for a product line that has been a footnote the last few years. The last time the mini got any coverage was the 2 ? 3 and 4 were footnotes?

Count me in for an iPad mini Pro. I currently use an iPad mini 2 that's showing it's age. Was hoping for a mini Pro to be announced alongside the 10.5" & 12.9"...but that didn't happen. But I still think it may happen in the fall. Or when Apple totally redesigns the iPad with a true bezel-less design. Perhaps in 2018 after the 10th anniversary iPhone comes out. I just want to be able to use the Apple Pencil for sketching on an iPad mini. It's the same size as my sketchbook, and the perfect size for travel. I really hope Apple doesn't discontinue the mini. It really is so much more useful than an iPhone plus for certain tasks, and so much more portable than the 10.5" or 12.9" iPad Pro.

The iPad Air 2 was already priced at $399.

Apple introduced the iPad (2017) at $329 because sales were tanking even at $399 level.

Customers want big display at a cheap price because everyone has a phablet. Your proposed $399 8" tablet goes the complete opposite way of what Apple has been doing.

The SE is targeted at India specifically. Last year, India bought over 130 million "dumb" feature phones and the majority of the population hasn't bought their first smartphone. Apple won't be updating their SE any time soon once again, in order to keep the price as low as possible.

This is the iPad that I was trade in my Mini 4 for. I hope that we see it some day.

That's a pretty broad generalization, and I think that the SE has been pretty successful in North America as well.

Whomever wanted a “Mini” has had plenty of opportunities to get one and on sale many times.

That market is dead, end of story and speculation. Why would Apple even bother putting out something now slightly smaller than a 9.7”?
