Tablets are supposed to be portable. Carrying a iPad retina is like carrying an iMac.

Not sure about this. a 21.5" iMac weighs 19.5 lbs. A iPad3 weighs 1.4 lbs. The mini comes in at 0.68 lbs (about 1/2 of the iPad 3).

MacBook Airs come in at 2.38 lbs and 2.96 lbs.

Comparing the iPad (any version) to a iMac does not qualify. If one is so weak they cannot carry 1.4 lbs comfortably I would get to a doctor quickly for a full checkup as there are probably medical issues here. ;)

For me, the mini is a step back from the iPad 3 or iPad 4 just based on technical specs. There are going to be people who want it and that is fine. Just as we have different versions of laptops and desktops, we can have different versions of the tablet.

There is no need to bash a iPad3 or 4 just because one prefers the mini.

I love my mini iPad. I am also one of those who sold their iPad 3 after having the iPad mini for a day. Portability won the day here. I suspect thats why people would choose a nexus or galaxy tab over an iPad before this mini came out. The iPad is positioned to be a laptop replacement for most and the mini is supposed to be the tablet. Very few people (5-10%) actually need the power of a full fledged laptop.

Ya that'd be good. iOS was designed for iPhones. It shouldn't be put on a tablet device

Thats actually not true. It was designed for tablets first. The iPhone idea came after their tablet idea.

My 3rd gen screen is more than fine, it's outstanding and it's not heavy at all.

I wouldn't call the iPad 3 heavy so much as i would call it less portable.

I have an Ipad 3 and I cannot hold it comfortable using my left hand holing on the left edge to read long article or play game for more than 15 minutes. Weight is a major issue for Ipad 3/4 and it is not a new thing. I use Ipad 3 mostly on my desk now or let it sit on my lap if I am sitting in a sofa. How do you use your Ipad 3/4 that you can hold it for a long time with one hand? I would love to learn the trick.

The mini is a great device, no doubt, but the larger ipad still has its place. When working on documents, spreadsheets or editing photos and videos, the larger iPad's screen is much easier on the eyes than the mini. I see the larger ipad eventually replacing laptops and the mini being the ultimate consumption device.

This.

None of these are perfect for everyone. It depends on your needs. I prefer the standard iPad as a replacement for a laptop as I enjoyed typing and being productive using it. But since I now have a very portable MacBook Air, I really only need to read and watch videos on the iPad, so the lighter and small form factor is perfect for me. Maybe not perfect for you, but perfect for me. But a few months ago, the standard iPad was perfect for me. It depends on the individual and the use. The standard iPad definitely still has its place, as does the iPad mini.

I'm a lefty so prop my right hand underneath it. 1.5 pounds is not a lot...

Exactly. My ipad is my "desktop" and a mini would be my "laptop". Since the iPad 4 is more future proof I got that now and will get a mini at the next refresh.

Just wait till the iPad becomes thinner and lighter, it would then bring some of the iPad mini owners back to the 9.7" that were complaining over the iPad being too heavy and not as portable.

Not buying a Mini until it has A6 processor, Retina display, and iPhone 4S/5 camera.
Hopefully the 2nd generation will have those features.

By that time the mini will have retina

The point is that the ipad 3 and retina are inconvenient to carry. The ipad 2 was better in that it was thinner and lighter. If weight and girth is the price to pay for a retina screen then maybe its not worth it yet. Yes the screen is very nice but its big and heavy.

I had the same concerns until I started using one. Now, I feel like they would actually add very little.

Would I use the device any differently if it had those things? No.

That's funny. And so true. People feel much better about their decisions if other people make the same ones.
No , I am just sick of reading how bad it is, it amazing and I would Even venture to say it might sell out the larger sized iPad.

Okay, seriously?

The hyperbole on all sides has gotten way out of hand.

FWIW, coming from an original iPad, the 3 felt downright svelte. Yes, it'd be very nice if it was lighter but it's still not nearly as heavy as people are making it out to be now. It's less good for bed than the N7 but still ideal on the couch. And btw, whatever happened to all those posters saying anything under 10'' was crap?

In fairness on the other hand, the mini screen isn't total junk either especially for those who never had the iPad 3 to get used to.

It's truly gotten ridiculous here.

I owned a iPad 3 since launch day,and every gen going back, I now have the mini and sold my iPad 3 with out regrets.

The iPad mini is an amazing light and then iPad.
The screen is fine people are making too much drama over the screen.
I am truly happy I sold my iPad 3 and moved to the I think it's a much better choice for me as it's lighter and easier to store and travel with.

I feel the same. I bought the Mini to test it out as I personally don't see a point in having both the regular iPad and the Mini. So I decided to give it a 2 week test run and see which one i grab more often the mini or the regular. So far it's been all Mini and while the screen isn't as great as a Retina, I do think people are overreacting. The mini is great, so light and easy to hold. The full size iPad feels so heavy and uncomfortable now. That said, I would be 100% if the Mini had a retina screen but it's still an awesome device.

Lol it really has..like the other gentleman said 1.4 pounds really shouldn't be an issue unless you ha e carpel tunnel

So, is this your first iDevice? Hearing all these things caused me to go to my local Apple Store this morning to check out the iPad mini for myself. I check it out and the iPad 4 right next to it. And, mind you, I had my credit card in my hand.

I will agree that the display is "not that bad". I would even say that it is adequate, but by no stretch of the imagination is it great or amazing. Anyone who says this is not be honest. Try this: go to CNN.com, don't zoom in and try to tell me the list of small headlines aren't blurry.

That said, otherwise it is a fantastic device. It's super light and feels awesome in your hands. It's the perfect size and I wonder why Apple didn't begin with this size initially. After handling the mini, the regular iPad feels clunky.

But, based on the screen, I just couldn't justify the purchase. I wanted a small tablet mostly for reading novels. The screen just doesn't appear to be made for reading, yet probably for your kids to watch videos or play games on.

Far from my first, I buy most items each year at launch, I have 22 items just the last two years alone.

You made the wrong choice. Retina trumps all.

Can we make a sticky "justify your purchase here" thread? Please?

God damn, stop the retina display circle jerk.

Well the good news is that you cant read it if you are on an iPad mini.

Oh shut the **** up and stop grossly over-exaggerating the screen like a 3 year old. It's a better screen than the iPad 2, I don't remember people saying the iPad 2's screen was bad. In fact, I remember them saying it was good.

Just because it's not as good as it could be that doesn't make it automatically bad.

Just like how you're acting like a retard right now doesn't make you a retard.
