Are people still droneing on about the iPad mini not having a retina display?!
The Mac's were never a Problem, iPhones were never a problem, nor were iPads 'till the iPad 3. Just shut up.

I think you could do a bit shutting up as well. So stop flapping your gums about how no one had a problem with the displays on the first iPads. Maybe you didn't, and this may come as a shock to you so prepare yourself, but you don't represent the masses of iPad users.

Hmm, this disagrees with both my personal experience with the Mini (which I like) and all the technical reviews of the Mini i.e. Ars Technica. To be clear, I'm NOT talking about resolution.
Really?

I wrote previously that the maximum brightness of the iPad mini's screen seems to go just beyond that of the third-generation iPad, and the display is just a hair bluer (but not particularly discernible if the two devices aren't side-by-side). Colors appear to be largely similar as well; I can tell some difference in side-by-side photos, but I don't foresee everyday users noticing much of a change.

With regards to the quality and accuracy of the images rendered on the mini's screen, I feel the same way about it as I do the display on Surface: it's not a Retina display, but still good.

In summary. Stop making things up.

Everything was rubbish after the iPhone 4, which was over two years ago. Once you heard iTunes plus files, would you be happy to go back to 64k mp3s? Once you had a car with electric start, would you be happy to go back to a hand crank?

Just because low resolution was ok once, doesn't mean it's ok now.

It's very high quality. Color reproduction, saturation, etc etc. all top notch.

Just PPI is bit low, but it's also a lower cost tablet. It's better than iPad 2, worse than iPad 4. Which is about right considering the price point.

Color reproduction is not top notch. The iPad 2 and mini reproduce roughly 65 percent of the RGB spectrum while the retina iPads product about 95 percent. Its almost laughable when side by side, not as bad on its own.

The mini is a compromise between quality and convenience. One many we're willing to make, but not me as it impacted what I do and appreciate on the iPad.

Assuming you've never had a Retina MacBook or iPad 3/4 you will find the Mini's screen perfectly acceptable. It's not THAT bad. And it's better than iPad 2 despite all the grumblings that the Mini is just an iPad 2.

To be honest I hope they don't go retina on the Mini, or that they have separate models. One retina, one not. I don't want the extra heft and weight that supporting a Retina screen will require on a device of this size. (Not to mention battery life...)

The Mini is a compromise, no question about it. But isn't all technology that way? You always make a compromise somewhere, be it price, quality, what have you.

Lots of ins, lots of outs, lot of what have yous.

Maybe that's why they kept iPad2 because of thinness? If so, perhaps that'll be the trend with mini as well?

Don't like it, don't buy it. Don't buy something without testing it then complaining it's not up to your standards.

How many people are going to complain about something that doesn't really matter? Want a higher resolution display? Then clearly you need the 3rd or 4th Generation or even a different tablet entirely.

How many people are going to complain about something that doesn't really matter?

Lots of people, evidently.

Want a higher resolution display? Then clearly you need the 3rd or 4th Generation or even a different tablet entirely.

And what if we want a higher resolution display larger than an iPod touch but smaller than a 3rd or 4th gen iPad, running iOS? What do you suggest we do then, huh?

The thing that some of us have difficulty understanding is how Apple can make a small retina screen in a slim iPod touch, and a large retina screen in a fat iPad, but can't make a medium retina screen in a medium iPad.

We all know it's going to happen eventually, it just grates that it hasn't happened yet. It grates especially knowing that all the iOS devices, except for last year's leftover iPad 2, have retina screens, and the retinisation of the laptop line is continuing.

It's not as good as retina but it is still a great gadget! Buy it if you think that it will suits you.

I am probably more susceptible to headaches than most when reading or browsing. The Mini isn't bothering me in that regard and it saved me money over keeping the 3rd or 4th gen.

I was just watching an episode of Sons Of Anarchy last night. Several times I thought to myself the it looked pretty dang good so got that covered as well for my needs.

It has a denser pixel set than ipad 2, andit makes the PDFs I view look great. I read text on it all the time and its great.

Sure, when I can buy the retina display mini, I will, but I'm very happy with this one for now.

good for reading, except for glare in sun

I took my iPad mini to the Caribbean as a book reader, as it has replaced my Kindle reader almost totally. It's a great eReader, and with the Kindle app for the mini, I can download my Kindle library with no problem.

Worked very well except for glare outside, if there was a bright sky.

Amazon has bunch of anti-glare screens made to fit the mini, and I've ordered a Fosmon screen set. We'll have to see how it works outside.

I have no problem reading on my Mini
Actually reading right now on it and paused to respond

I find the display to be very good personally and certainly meets my needs

Some don't like it, others do
Personal preference I suppose

I love mine

Bullpups have low standards.

i'm using it right now and I'm not in any pain, so it must be a matter of personal preference. My only concern with reading on it is it uses up the battery faster than I'd like. I love my mini, no regrets. I've read several books on it and love it. I use it far more than I thought I would, especially now that I bought the Zagg mini 7. It's even let me put off replacing my decrepit core duo iMac for a few more months. Did I mention I love it? I will not upgrade it just for retina, however, if said retina is achieved with an IGZO display, I may buckle. The form factor is awesome and I won't want to replace it with another that is thicker and heavier just for retina.

How is it ****ing dim?! I have to keep my minis brightness at 50% or lower or it's like a flashlight shining at me.

The problem with quantifying Apple products with built-in displays is that Apple sources displays from multiple manufactures, and quality can vary even among one manufacture's panels.

Just because Anandtech, Ars, or some forum member gives their unit's display one grade is no guarantee yours will be the same.

I cannot stress this point enough.

When it has the retina display, people's opinions will change.

They will change to "look how crap the fat iPads screen is, compared to the retina mini bwaaaaaaaaaah"

TruFact.

----------

Every time I read one of these "mini bashing" threads, this image pops into my head.

It's an image of the OP on their knees, with a huge dude looming over them with a gun pointed at the OPs head. The OP is screaming "No, please don't MAKE me buy a mini"

Just bought a Samsung Ativ 500T. Reading PDFs on it is awful. Looks really bad even compared to the iPad Mini.

Something is wrong with font rendering on those Windows 8 tablets. The same PDFs looks amazing on my non-retina MacBook Pro.

I think the iPad Mini needs better font rendering for PDFs. iBook epubs look better than PDFs on the iPad Mini.

They will change to "look how crap the fat iPads screen is, compared to the retina mini bwaaaaaaaaaah"

Or they will complain about performance and battery capacity, comparing with the regular iPad. They might also complain about weight, size or charge time, comparing with the first iPad mini.

Are people still droneing on about the iPad mini not having a retina display?!
The Mac's were never a Problem, iPhones were never a problem, nor were iPads 'till the iPad 3. Just shut up.

Computer screens were never a problem before they were color, do you want to go back to monochrome green?

Dot matrix printers were never a problem before laser printers...

Dial up was never a problem before ISDN...

VHS was never a problem before DVD...

ETC.

My iPad Minis display is perfectly fine. People will find anything to complain about.

Does it have a high resolution? Nope, but I knew that going in and neither did my iPad 2 and everyone loved those.

People are spoiled
