I got the iPad retina the other week, the mini format makes no sense to me. It is still too big to fit in my pockets and when carried in the hand or a bag it is not easier to take with you than the retina.

I'd be more forgiving of the screen if it also didn't look so washed out compared to other devices like the iPad 3/4 iPhone 5 and touch 5. As. Well as other non apple devices. The dpi is quite jarring coming from other devices with better screens but I think it's the washed out colors that bother me the most.

For what YOU want to do with it, it seems that the mini would be the better option. I personally don't find the mini all the more portable than the full sized iPad though, and the retina display is FAR superior. The choice is yours.

For the lifestyle you have, iPad mini will suit your needs better. You will appreciate its lighter weight and smaller size, especially during extended use. The iPad 4 may have a better display but the IPS display on the mini is far from a letdown. Watching a movie, for instance, you won't see the difference in terms of video quality. Browsing is, well.. just browsing. You may notice pixels on the mini but it shouldn't bother you to the point of ruining the entire experience. But, of course, if the need to buy an iPad is not that urgent, then I'd say wait a couple more months as rumors have been going around that the next generation iPad mini will sport a retina display.

I don't find that to be true.

I could still easily see the difference between retina and non on trailers app.

Watching an animation trailer made it more obvious (I think Despicable Me2)

For me I already have an iPhone when I'm out and about. Portable and retina. I use my iPad at home mainly because I'm too lazy to boot up and charge a laptop every day. So for me the Full size iPad works better since it gives me the screen of a laptop but the battery life of my iPhone.

I too have been contemplating this question, but also have the Nexus 7 in my mix so I'm not sure which one to go for. On the other hand, there are rumours regarding the iPad Mini 2 which should have retina display, so I may be holding out for that.

Retina is way over rated. I have iPad mini, iPad 4 and iPhone 5 and can barely tell a difference. Retina is nice but also a lot of hype. I love the iPad mini and use it more than anything I have. Hardly even use my MacBook Pro anymore except for music. I don't even care if they come out with a mini retina, I will use the one I have until it dies or I can no longer upgrade it. I don't get any blurry images or font when reading. I think anyone who does needs glasses.

That makes no sense. Only people with good vision can see the pixels. The fact that you can't makes me think maybe it's you who needs glasses.

As others have said, the resolution and color saturation is quite a step down from any retina device. I love the form factor but I'll be waiting.

This.

If you need it now (like I did) then get it now.

There is no point waiting (possibly) 8 months for the announcement and waiting a few weeks after that for availability. Get it now, sell it later (Apple products hold their value) for the next version if you want.

where is the best place to see ipads?

like on amazon?

How do you type on that?

I hate typing on touch screen devices.

Do people actually do essays on an ipad?

Why? it will be another 8 months. Get what you want now. Not that big of a difference trust me I have both and never use my iPad 4 anymore.

There's a huge difference, in my opinion. There is a very noticeable difference between the ipad mini and the Nexus 7 in terms of screen resolution. The difference between 768p and retina is night and day, especially for reading.

Retina for the win!

Apple spoiled me with retina, once you get used to the high resolution you cannot look at any other display the same way!

I tell you, when you get the retina, every now and then you will marvel at the color, sharpness and resolution! Everything is smooth especially text and pictures look beautiful.

Retina is great. The iPad Mini is fine.

Let's not exaggerate how good or bad things are, your eyes get used to the Mini display quickly. Most of the screens that surround us in the modern world are not high res, and most of the screens we've seen in our lives were not retina either. Displays will get better over time but to say you "can't" use a non-retina screen after being exposed to retina is silly.

Do you guys think that this is a good time to buy the Mini? I don't necessarily need it now, but I like the convenience of the smaller and lighter device to read books as compared to my iPad 2.

How much would the resale value of the Mini decrease if there is a Retina Mini release June-ish (if not April-ish?)?

I bought the Mini last Wednesday. Very happy I did, and I have an iPad 4 too. Wonderful for reading, you forget is not retina after a while.

There's no way to predict when the new versions will be released, we only know it's unlikely to be March. I would advise a potential buyer to focus on content/usage and not the device itself because you're unlikely to use the next iPads any differently from the current ones (the changes won't be so great), but I realize that's not the most popular view.

You'd be fine if you bought it now. Especially if you want one. I doubt apple will update it until this summer at the earliest but I guess that's just speculation. And when they do, you could always sell it when the new one comes out. I bet you'd be able to fetch $250 for it easy.
