AT&T on Verizon

Just got my Verizon retina mini at Apple Store. Asked the Apple rep if I can get AT&T SIM card. He gave it to me on the spot. Came home, popped in AT&T SIM card and everything is up and running. I am getting LTE strength. Added mini to my mobile share plan. AT&T offered $100 credit for 2 year contract as well during activation.

I had an iPad mini version 1 and was using it with AT&T as part of my mobile share data plan. Several weeks wait for an new AT&T version iPad mini version 2 retina and not finding stock at any local stores.

Was seeing regular stock available for Spring and T-Mobile versions at several local Apple stores, so ended up buying a T-Mobile version. Swapped the T-Mobile SIM for my AT&T SIM and turned on Cellular and working no problem with my AT&T plan. Only issue is inability to view data plan or sign up for plan as typical from new device but would be expected as on contract shared plan and not sure I could even do this from old iPad mini due to plan type in use.

Never attempted to activate the T-Mobile SIM, so that could have helped to avoid the IMEI number form being associated with T-Mobile account.

And if I am going to buy an iPad in US and use it abroad, as far as I understand, I can buy any model including Sprint?
Asking about Sprint cause iPhones on Sprint are locked. Sprint iPads are not, right?

The Apple refurbished store only has AT&T models available for the iPad Mini 2.

Do you know if I buy an iPad Mini 2 for AT&T, will work on Verizon?

All of my research says "yes" but the Apple store chat rep said "no"... actually, she said "Only the Verizon iPad has the LTE chips to use with the CDMA network. The AT&T model does not support Verizon."

That doesn't seem right based on this thread. I got another rep later who said that it comes configured out of the box for that carrier, but he also implied it wouldn't work.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

It will work but it's not gonna be easy. For one thing, Verizon's not gonna let you activate service with the AT&T iPad mini 2. If you already have a working SIM, you're fine. If not, then good luck getting one.

i actually had a really long discussion about this when the retina mini came out (ipad mini 2). from what i ended up learning, if you want the most options in the future, get a sprint device. they said that the sprint ones have an extra "antenna" or something inside of it. all else is the same.

example:
so you cant get a t mobile ipad mini & decide to use it on sprint some day but you can get a sprint ipad mini and decide to use it on any other carrier someday.

i had to learn this because i got a tmobile version when it first came out for the free 200mb data but had to return it when i found out that they were NOT as "unlocked" as they claimed to be for the retina versions (because sprint wouldnt activate it). it was funny that even people at the apple store didnt know that at the time. but i made sure that the sprint versions can be used on any other carrier. for some reason, sprint is extra discriminatory about the "citizenship" of your ipad.
