    Side by side? Probably..

If you're asking if the first generation mini is high enough quality to watch Netflix? Yes.

Use an iPhone 3GS and then use a 4/5/5s. You will see a similar screen quality difference between the minis.

I watch Netflix on my rMini almost every day.. It looks fine to me. ATT's LTE ensures its streaming HD as well.

I use my retina Mini with Netflix all the time. My first iPad was the original Mini and it was ok on Netflix, not as good as the Retina but doable.

I had the original mini as well. I enjoyed many hours of watching Netflix. The picture quality to me with just fine.

I never had the original Mini, but the rMini in watching Netflix and Hulu is great. I obviously could not comment on the differences in picture quality though.

videos are a bit more crisp on the retina depending on the quality of video you watch

Do you still get the black bars top and bottom watching Netflix? Or is it just other movies.

Most movies have them. Only older shows such as Twilight Zone go full screen.

No you wouldn't notice a difference. You'll get (at best) HD quality video from Netflix and Hulu Plus whether you're using a regular iPad mini or a retina iPad mini.
