Makes sense, space out the releases to try and get more sales by having a few months in between maybe get some who bought the new full sized iPad to also get the mini.

The secret is to swear off girlfriends during your college years ;)

If you manage that, your a stronger man than most :p

I would trade my iMac, iPad and iPhone for the fun I had with Girlfriends in college any day. Somethings are just to much fun not to waste money on :D

And when I was in college, we had to buy our own stuff. For many of us, we did not have $400 in disposable finances to spend on anything other than books, tuition, and for the fortunate, the one computer. :)

Dude, my papers for the first 2 years of school were done on a typewriter, LOL. :D I would've paid a lot of money for a working backspace key. :p

LOL, I did catch the beginning of the iDevice revolution while in college and grad school, but living on a $1,250 stipend (out of which tax, rent, food and books will have to come out), I settled for a second hand PC rather than a Mac, and got my first iPod in early 2005 as a gift for my first -real- job.

I predict that Apple will release products as soon as they can get them into the stores.

Apple is the most reported on company in the world right now. It does not matter when they release a product. It will always be a big media event.

If they launch mid-summer, they will get parents buying for their kids who are heading back to school in the fall. If they launch in the fall, they will get the Christmas shopping season.

The longer they wait to launch a new product, the more sales they risk losing to competitors.

I find this interesting. Among my friends (I am in college) they are all disappointed that apple doesn't update their hardware as frequently as other companies. To non tech savvy people to wait 6 months to buy a new product is unheard of. They will just go out an buy the top of the line android tablet that came out days ago since they don't want to by a 5 month old device from Apple.

I know this is on the second page, and few will see it. Jaredly was NOT saying that they upgrade their stuff every 2 months. He was saying that his buddies are not going to justify spending full price on an iPad that was released 5 months ago.

He's saying they want the latest tech when they make their purchase. Not that they buy the latest tech every 2 weeks...

Makes sense.

Beat me to it.

That rumor was not unique to Digitimes. They merely reiterated what a half-dozen publications have stated before. WSJ and Bloomberg put out similar info (i.e. Retina iPad in Q1 ''12, revision in Q4 ''12) months before. As it stands, Digitimes' overall record is shoddy and every rumor they've started, they've gotten half-right, at the very best. Any rumor from them should be taken with a bucketful of salt.

Hence the keyword "immediately".

Apple wont cannibalize the 9.7 ipad with Mini sales. So they will release the new iPad and in few month release an updated (now with iPad 3 Speeds) and retina display! They will purposely keep things a gen behind and up the margins.

Why don't they just make the mini a phone and call it good. It's not that much bigger than those giant android phones anyway.

lots of us will just choose to wait and not cannibalize our wallets

my ipad 2 is still going strong

Starting production in November means the iPad mini would miss both back-to-school and Christmas buying seasons. That makes about as much sense as Apple buying a clothing retailer. Then again most of the Apple related articles in Digitimes make even less sense than that.

I might be the only one that thinks this but from a profit stand point it would most definitely be more beneficial to release them separate from one another to get some people that just can't wait for new mini to cash in early and spurge for the iPad 5.

This was exactly what I was trying to say. My friends are poor college students like everyone else and when they are going to spend money on new tech they want it to be the newest thing on the market. Yes resale value and arguable OS isn't as good in android tablets but many feel a three day old android tablet is more worth it than a 5 month old IPad

In Steve's Bio , there is a quote from him saying never worry about cannibalising your own products, if you don't someone else will. I don't see why everyone thinks different

And with Apple products usually doing well in keeping their value, people are tempted to sell them while still getting money, thus a more frequent upgrade to the newer device seems less costly than using the old one until it breaks and then spending the full sum (without sales revenue) for a new device.

This. This is exactly why I am able to keep up with Apple with the exclusion of my iPhone, which I just wait until the contract ends each time, and my Mac, which I [plan to] upgrade ever 4 or so years. I've had the iPad 2, New iPad, and now the iPad w/ Retina Display. By following this site religiously, I normally am able to sell my current 16GB iPad's on eBay a week before Apple announces the newest one, and therefore sell them for anywhere between 450 and 490! So yes, while you could look at it in 3 or 4 years and just equate it that I've spent at least 700 bucks on the 16GB wifi iPad 2, I prefer to just look at it that I'm only spending about 50 bucks to upgrade. Not such a bad deal if I must say so myself.

I wish people would stop demanding a retina iPad mini.!!

it doesn't NEED a new screen to be "retina", its already close enough to make no difference.

I make a difference.
All people with a good view make a difference.
Buy a retina iPad Mini AND new glasses.

This is going to be bad for me. I made the decision a long time ago that if the next iPad mini received a Retina display, I would be getting that, ONLY if the 5th generation iPad didn't receive a thinner/ lighter bezel to make the physical size smaller. Now I'm at a fork in the road. If this does happen, what do I do? Do I get the iPad mini w/ Retina, or wait a couple of months to see if the 5th gen iPad has a smaller bezel? Ughh

I guess the answer depends on the kind of buyer you are. If you're the type to upgrade every few years, it doesnt really matter, you'll be replacing it soon. If, however, you're like me and want the best, but cannot afford to constantly upgrade, so you keep things for a while, then wait. What's a couple of months in the grand scheme of things. Make sure you get the one that fits you best. A fully loaded iPad is around a $1000. That's not disposable for me. Therefore, I'll make sure I get the one I really want and keep it for 5+ years and love it every day.

I'm currenly writing this on an oritinal iPad and I like it. It was my mom's. She bought it for her business and upgraded to the 3 about a month before the 4 came out. She doesn't care, because she'll replace the current one in another couple of years. Her business writes it off. I haven't bought one myself yet, because the iPad isn't quite where I'm willing to spend that kind of cash yet. When this one came out and I played with hers (again, this one) and really liked it, but I wanted 3 things before I dropped a grand: a facetime camera (iPad 2), full HD resolution (iPad 3) and 1/4 TB of storage (almost). Then I'll have the iPad that I'll be happy with long enought to justify that kind of money.

Apple is highly skilled at marketing. They've cleverly set themselves up for more profit taking than ever.

By milking the iPad mini for all it's worth, concurrently they will sell more full size iPads than if they flipped it and gave a retina display to the mini before releasing the next iPad.

There's no hiding the fact they are choking on all the cash they have and prolonging the release of the next iPad mini with retina. (if indeed they upgrade the display)

This is nothing more than business as usual for Apple.

These people are in the minority I would assume. For most people they are happy buying an iPad every 1-2 years or even longer.

I bought my first iPad, an iPad 3 16gb, the day after last Christmas and will probably not ever buy another tablet. I bought it because Skype is blocked in Kuwait, but Facetime is not.

Yap I see them squeezing ever bit out of their devices. *sigh* That fact and their lack of increasing memory etc in their devices led me to purchase a Note 8.0... For the last 3-4 years all our devices have been Mac. I am also considering building a PC again. I hope they do something quick like add memory slots or drop their prices on these things because people are starting to go elsewhere and the reports are showing it.
