I recently received a new iPad Pro that I ordered from Costco. The problem is that they shipped it without protection inside a lightly padded envelope. The iPad box itself was banged up, with black marks and adhesive on the outside.

I’m returning this, no question — nobody in their right mind would accept this looking the way it does — basically, it cannot be resold the way it looks. I haven’t opened it, but I’m considering it just to try out the 11 size to see if it is the right size for me. If I like it, I would still return and reorder directly from Apple.

Does Apple pay the price for a return to a reseller like Costco? If so, this wouldn’t be right since they didn’t make the decision to ship the product in the wrong packaging.

Do not open it if you want to return it, especially with the box being banged up. Either keep it or return it. You can’t rightfully complain about lousy shipping practice and then want to open it up and play with it, as if the former doesn’t really matter to you.

No, you're dealing with Costco not Apple. Costco has a very good return and refund policy. If there's a Costco store nearby, you can take the iPad still in its original damaged packaging to them and return it that way and get your refund. As stated above, do not open it up and play with it.

Costco in my experience has great customer service when it comes to returns. They don’t seem to have any trouble getting the faulty stuff back to the manufacturers.

Thanks for your opinion. I’m going to return it unopened. It is unfortunate that they don’t take better care in how they ship things out.
