This has happened to me before as well :(
I had to re-email the document to myself again and quickly open it before mail app turned it into a picture, but it doesn't help if it's from someone elder :(
That is bizarre. Anytime I have gotten the question mark I just tap on it and it downloads the rest of the message. Did they have you do a restore and see if it came back to life?
That doesn't work, it just pops up "copy" when you tap it. We definitely did a restore, among other things. I sat in the apple store last week for over an hour while they tried everything they knew, even sent the emails to their "test" ipad in the store...same thing.

At the moment, I am using goodreader by accessing my personal email through their add server option, and it is working (thanks to someone else here for that tip). Just another step to go through; however, it is much more efficient than going to email through safari.

Thanks for the advice!

This is kind of pathetic. If its not just a bug that's only affecting a percentage of users, I don't know how they were able to okay the Mail app with this problem.

Stanza causing problems

I had the same problem, it turned out to be an app called Stanza. A book reader that I had downloaded ages ago on my iPhone. It got installed automatically on my iPad and I hadn't deleted it. Just the other day it got updated.

Once I deleted it from my iPad my multi-page email attached PDF all worked fine

There is a separate issue with single page PDF and forwarding them but this appears to be something we have to wait for Apple to fix.

Same problem for me (single and multi page PDFs only showing as an image in Mail). I deleted Stanza and it now works fine. Thanks!

I can confirm that removing Stanza worked for me on both iPad and iPhone - great tip folks! The problem was still resolved even after I then reinstalled
Stanza.

Previously the PDF would only download as an image of the front-page, which i could not open and only copy to the clipboard.

[FYI I did the remove/reinstall by deleting Stanza in iTunes, re-syncing (and selecting "Don't transfer" purchases from iPad/iTunes, so that Stanza is deleted), and then reinstalling by downloading Stanza again from the iTunes AppStore on my computer and re-syncing.]

Note that PDFs can now be opened up from an email and stored in the latest version of iBooks, both on iPad & iPhone.
This resolves the problem of having to find your PDFs within a particular email, possibly removes the need for GoodReader.

I am having the same problem with multi-page .pdf files. For instance with a 120pg .pdf file only the first page is visible in the email and there is no option to save it, view it etc.

Most frustrating as reading emailed .pdf files was the main reason for purchasing the iPad!

I've been doing the same. I could easily download a 120 pg .pdf file and have a choice of opening it into any app: GoodReader, Pages or ReaddleDocs. For some reason w/in the last 2 weeks, the email no longer functions the same. Yes, I can download from my computer beautifully, but I bought the iPad so that when I traveled I didn't need to bring my laptop along. Most of my documents from work are over 100 pages and it doesn't work like it use too. Extremely disappointed to have this suddenly change.

PART 2

If I'd read to the bottom for Hibsboy's comments, I would have had my answer. This worked perfectly! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can live without Stanza if I have to. : )

For everyone who is having multi-page PDFs working just fine, are 1pg PDFs working for you at all?

Removing Stanza didn't solve the whole problem. There seems to be a problem with the current iOS, in the Mail app, with single-page PDF attachments.
I have even reset my iPAD to factory settings to isolate the problem, and the problem continues.

You can copy and paste the attachment into a program that allows you to create a PDF using the content of the clipboard. I found out that iAnnotate does that. the resulting file maintains it's original attributes (text, graphics, bitmap, vector, etc.). If Stanza implements this feature, we could consider the problem 'solved'.:D

I usually just email myself the address to the pdf file and then open it in safari with the ghttp:// shortcut.

PDF opens in email no attachment icon

I have just downloaded the new OS For the iPad but the PDF opening instantly has not been resolved:mad: I have been on the phone with Apple support about this and they are looking into it. I don't have Stanza only GoodReader and iBooks. I have even had Apple replace the iPad.

i had the same problem before, and deleting stanza solved it.

However, I just noticed that I was having this problem again, and deleting stanza doesn't work any more. Besides, I believe the current version of stanza has already fixed this bug. Now I don't know what's causing the problem!

So far for me, after the 3.2.1 update, my PDFs have been fine.
A single page PDF still show up in Mail.app as an image, however when I long press on it, I have the option of opening in iBooks or GoodReader.

PDF & Goodreader

I think you are missing what I am saying. Some PDFs show up as PDFs in Mail.app, and I am able to open them in GoodReader. However, some PDFs just show up as images in Mail.app, and I am literally unable to do anything with them (open them in GoodReader, Copy them to a new email message, forward the email with the PDF attached). There is some problem in how Mail.app is treating some PDFs.

I have a serious problem with the last PDF I opened with Goodreader. The PDF opened into 9 pages but now I can't open any more email. I can't dump the PDFs. I tried shutting down but when I press the mail icon, the same 9 pages appear. Any solutions?

I know sometimes (okay most of the time) when I email our office ladies, the mail server removes the file extension and replaces it with .dat. Is that a possibility ? They have to change it to xls or PDF as appropriate.

Goodreader normally opens the last PDF every time you start it. To bypass your problem, you need to set Goodreader so it doesn't open anything when started.

To domthis, go to Home -> Settings -> Goodreader and turn ON the only prion listed, which says: "Don't Open Anything".

Then start Goodreader again; your problem should now be solved. :D

I have 3.2.2 and still have one page pdf's showing as an image

You should be able to tap and hold, and a menu should open asking you what to do with the file.
If your problem persists, you may have a side effect caused by an old build of Stanza. You'll need to remove Stanza using iTunes on your desktop/laptop, then removed the purchase from iTunes, and buy it again; it shouldn't cost you anything, as you already paid for it.

In addition....

My husbsnd had issues with a multipage pdf yesterday. He couldn't figure out how to get back to email from the first page image after opening in Goodreader (and BTW yiu need to hold your finger for a moment in the file in gmail or the image in most other email to get the list to what will open it). I showed him how to touch it in center, getting the mail icon in top left to get back ti screen ti delete.

I'd recommend using Dropbox instead of emailing pdfs to yourself. Goodreader works great with Dropbox.

Update to the latest iPad SW (4.3.2 at the time of this post), hold down right at the PDF image within the body, should give you the option to "Open in iBooks" (install it first from the App Store - its free if you don't have it yet) and that should save a copy on your iPad :)

PDF opening issue

This a very specific problem. I went to crested butte .com and clinked the trail map. It crashed my safari. Then I went back into safari and it crashed it a second time. Any insight on this issue?

Hi all, this is an old thread but I have a solution that works for me. If you send a 1-page PDF (from any app, I think) and have "rich text" in your mail signature (like bold, italics, etc.) then many non-Apple mail programs can't read it. Try changing your signature to be plain text or nothing and see what happens.
This answer came courtesy of Notetaker HD help desk (awesome app by the way)
