Basically get something like that. You can get 1GB ones which last for 1 month or 3GB ones which last for 3 months. Basically get the SIM out of the packaging stick it in and you're ready to go! Speeds on 3 mobile I find are the best here as well on 3G. Once you have used up your allowance or the time has run up they stop working and you can buy another! You don't need to faff around with putting credit on it or giving any of your details.

Got back from New York and thought I'd let everyone know how it went! Couldn't find anywhere which would sell me a gift credit card so had to ring my mate in the UK who has an AMEX Card to set it up. Until the card was loaded kept coming up No Signal as well which was confusing the lady who was giving me the SIM card. The lady asked me to try my credit cards first but none of them would work though she said sometimes foreign cards can work. Also had to manually put the APN settings in which was annoying as I had taken the SIM card back to the hotel to set it up so fortunately I had wifi so looked it up. Think you just put in broadband and leave username/password blank.

Now onto the LTE network, my god it is fast. Most times was getting 10MB+ speeds and one day when I was driving past Times Square was getting 40MB download and 20MB upload, my home internet connection is 100/10 and I can't even manage to get 40MB out my WIFI! Unbelievable speeds really and you do go through data pretty quickly. Was so handy though as could use the net and brilliant for Google maps when we needed directions and for finding places to eat/visit! Went out to Woodbury common and was on something called 4G which I'm guessing is the equivalent to our 3G back home as the speeds were similar.

The Hotel WIFI was the usual rubbish. Also used tetherme on the iPad and connected our phones upto it when needed. Handy for checking email and also for calling back home as could use Skype/Viber to call back home.

Came more for sightseeing but when we got there turned out the sales were starting so ended up spending a lot more than planned  Didn't get to see everything we wanted so promised the wife to take her back as this was my second time so I've seen everything before............so when do you lot have sales next :D

Damn you lot get things so much cheaper, the wife loves her A&F stuff and her hoodies here cost her £72 and in America were like £40, outrageous how badly we get shafted out here! Then Woodbury Common (which is ****ing huge) was crazy cheap as well! And this is with the exchange rate being quite poor for us at the moment as well!

But having the iPad was brilliant, crazy how much we all rely on the net these days and would have made things a lot harder otherwise.

[edit]

And thanks again to everyone for their help!

Glad to here it all worked out for you.

Can you elaborate on 'tetherme'. Is this the shared hotspot feature on AT&T? Or is this a seperate app from the UK?

From what I have seen AT&T has yet to activate the hotspot feature for the new iPad.

My iPad is jail broken so it something you can get off Cydia. Let's you tether and as far as I'm aware the carrier doesn't know you are doing it either as it makes it look like the device I'm question is being used.

Yep, Americans finally got something better than the rest of the world now

I have the Verizon iPad3, planning to get the Three UK SIM card when I go to the UK later on. I was told it is the the network that supports personal hotspot at the moment. Is that correct?

It does show up on my iPad but if I'm honest with you I'm not sure that is due to me having TetherMe or because 3 mobile are supporting it.

Which sim did you go for in the end. I'm from the uk and in new York next and would like a sim for my iPad 3. Something prepaid or payg.

Thanks.
