Just bought the Logitech Combo Touch for my iPad Pro 10.5" and love it! But like many others have mentioned, it is a bit bulky. Since you have the ability to use just the keyboard, does anyone know of any rear case options that would still have the a kickstand or other ways to prop up the iPad?

Just bought the Combo Touch also, should arrive in a couple days. Not sure how you would get a case that would not be similar in bulk and/weight, and difference in aesthetics as well.

IIRC I've seen some kickstand cases out there on eBay etc, but most also looked bulky, and most don't have the cutout for the magnets. Plus they look pretty mediocre in terms of design. From the sounds of it, the hinge and tilt options of the Logitech are way better than most of the eBay kickstand cases would be.

OTOH, for my Apple Smart Keyboard, I just use a $10 back case, because no kickstand is needed, but of course it does not have a trackpad or backlight.

Seems that there have been others that have had success using a third party amazon case+cover combo (sold by Khomo, ESR) and carrying the keyboard separately.

Alternatively, could try with a separate stand like demonstrated in 9to5Mac’s video. (See 8:00 mark)

I ended up using a Moft kickstand on the back of my otherwise careless iPad Pro 10.5 and it’s been working great so far. I really liked the kickstand on the Logitech back case and didn’t really mind the weight, but the bulkiness was just getting to me after a while. If anyone came out with a thin case with a Logitech-like kickstand, I’d use it in a heartbeat, but for now, the Moft solution is thin, lightweight, and not even noticeable when I’m not using it. I also applied it sidsways (ie perpendicular to how they recommend applying it) so that the flat side would be on the table/my lap when the iPad is horizontal on the keyboard. I can’t post pictures of it now but will try to do so later. It’s not quite as stable on the lap as the Logitech kickstand, but is stable for me when it’s on a table or desk, which is what I expected.

I switch out the Logitech keyboard (which i LOVE by itself, btw) with an Apple Smart Cover depending on what I’m doing, and this solution has proven to work really well for me. I also have a magnetic sleeve on my 1st gen Apple Pencil which keeps it tucked on the side relatively strongly when I’m not using it.

Yeah definitely a creative stand - looked into the Moft kickstands and they’re pretty cool but there are a number of reviews suggesting that after a month the adhesive comes loose which doesn’t bode well as a long-term solution.

Would love to see pics of your setup if you can!

Thanks for the idea, I’m waiting for my Logitech case (looks like about another month) and I was a bit worried about the extra bulk. I currently use a Brydge keyboard with my 10.5 Pro and like being able to just use my iPad without any extra bulk and then easily slide it into the keyboard when I want. This solution should keep the best (ish) of both worlds. Hopefully the Moft will give me the angles I need.

Here are pics of the setup, sorry it took me a few days to respond. I put the Moft stand on sideways, as you can see - they advertise that the iPad version is supposed to go lengthwise, and mine juuust fit on my 10.5 Pro this way. I did it so that it would be more stable on my lap with the flat side facing down, but I’m sure it’d work great if you installed it the correct way. The downside is that I only get one viewing angle this way, but it’s the right angle for me so I don’t care. You get more viewing angles when it’s installed correctly.

I actually like it a lot. Like I said I use the Logitech keyboard with the Smart Cover interchangeably depending on what I’m doing, so I always have both nearby, and sometimes I’ll put the folded Smart Cover on my lap under the Moft stand for extra stability. I’ve never liked bulky back cases so this works great for me. It actually reminds me a lot of my old 11“ iPad Air I had years ago.

This is pretty much the set up I was thinking of going with after trawling the internet for ideas. 2 questions though -

Lapability? What is this stand like on the lap. I often use my iPad on the sofa and on my lap and wonder if this would compromise that.

Lights on the keyboard - do the backlights turn off when you close the keyboard as I had a play around with mine last night and the back lights appear to stay on when it‘s closed unless you use the rear shell?

As far as using it on the lap is concerned, it’s not bad, but a bit less stable than using it without the kickstand case it comes with. I’m typing this on the couch in my lap right now, with my feet up on an ottoman and it’s working fine for me with my Moft stand rested on one of my knees, although the screen shakes a bit as I type. However I don’t usually type like this since I’ve used a small lap desk ever since my laptop days. Even laptops never felt comfortable to me when I had them open on my lap on the couch.

I noticed the lights on the keyboard staying on once when I still had the Logitech back case on my iPad, actually. I haven’t noticed it since then. I’d think that the magnets that cause the iPad to sleep/wake when the keyboard is closed should control the backlights, right? Maybe it’s a bug?

Hmmm. Thanks for the response. I was seriously considering adding a khomo shell and then the Moft stand but although I’ll loose weight I think I’ll end up with a comparable thickness. I think I’ll stick with the Logitech for now - another £50 for a separate case and kickstand isn’t great, I use my iPad on my lap a lot and would be concerned about loosing the stability. Glad it’s working for you though!

So after further consideration and a great deal of swithering I’ve decided to go for the moft. I’s more versitle that the kickstand and comes with a pencil holder (I think) so that‘ll solve that problem. I can just use my original shell and get the same usabulity. If not i’ll order a Khomo!

This is the route I'll probably end up going with if I find the stock case too heavy although I'd prefer to just go with a "thin" case that has an apple pencil hold built in. Maybe something like the khomo.

I received my Moft and Keyboard today.
I put the Moft in the recommended orientation but at the top of the iPad, this way when folded out the stand sits more in the centre of the device. If its at the bottom tapping in the top left of the screen will push the iPad over, with how I’ve got it it takes an extra hard push to topple it.

With this orientation you get 4 different angles (some are very similar).

There doesn’t seem to be any update for my keyboard yet but the trackpad works perfectly (so far).

I honestly wouldn't be mad if Logitech was "inspired" by this style set up. It's very clean although I would still prefer to use a case.

Ok so using the Khomo 10.5 case with the Moft has worked out well - way less bulked, still have a usable stand and pencil holder!

How are you all finding this setup? I am considering getting the same just now. I wonder if the maximum angle (60) isn’t actually high enough to be comfortable to view? How does it work in the lap? Are any of you still using it?
