Had iPad Air 2 (128gb / wifi only) purchased the iPad Pro 10.5 (258gb / wifi only). Mid August 2017. I always run the most current iOS version 10.3.3 and backup to MacBook pro (always the most up to date OS X) every 2-3 days.

The processing performance is amazing and being a power-user of music apps, this was the main reason for the upgrade

However, I have some serious issues with the battery performance, here's the feedback i have provided to apple.

I bought direct from apple store, within 4 days noticed the performance of the battery wasn't as good as iPad Air 2. Sometimes the iPad Pro will drain 20-30% overnight with out it even being on. Sometimes I can be on safari and see the power drain literally 1% every 2-3 minutes. Also have trouble charging to 100%, sometimes it will, sometimes wont, mostly stopping at 96%. When it doesn't fully charge I have noticed that the supplied power brick is very hot to touch.

I've let it drain to nothing, took half a day to recharge to a point that I could switch it on again.

I have raised this with Apple Support, but have been told not enough people have complained and that I will have to live with it until they do. They also told me, I should only use apps that back up to a cloud service, because the back-up maybe corrupted and this could be the problem. I have been told that the apps may not be updated to handle the bigger resolution of the Pro and is causing a drain.

Have removed all apps and reset to factory settings, but have been told it could be a problem with restoring from backup.

I am genuinely disappointed that I bought the iPad Pro 10.5.

iPad Pro - Anything you can do, you can do better. (but just try to do it before the battery drains)

You’ve got hanging apps or a faulty device. I regularly use 2 different 10.5” iPad Pros, and both lose about 1-2% per day when sleeping.

Even running public beta on my personal iPad, I’m still getting stellar performance.

Something isn’t right.
I know, I've had the iPad Pro for 16 days and for 10 of them I've been running tests (often the same test over and over again) and not actually using the iPad. This is my 4th iPad and the most disappointing experience I have had with apple.

I don't know what to do, apple support keep passing me around, telling me they will solve my problem only to tell me they may solve it sometime in the next 12 months.

But it's good to know that your experience has been a positive one.

The battery life on mine has been excellent. What has been using up your battery life - can you check under settings and report back?

It can be any app. I may not even have the app open and it will report it as the biggest power user. However, when i reset to factory setting it was Safari, but then again I cant see how browsing a few forums for 30-60 minutes would drain the battery by 20-30% when it is asleep overnight.

Would an APP, any APP, have an affect on the charging overnight, would it stop the iPad Pro from charging to 100%?

Great that you are willing to help, hope you can provide more advice than the 10 or so apple employees that have already tried.

Two things to test out. Before you go to bed this evening, open up mutitasking and swipe close all apps before putting the iPad into sleep. See if there is any improvement in the morning.
If that fails, tomorrow evening do the same but then shutdown fully and restart your iPad then put it to sleep without using any apps and see if there is any improvement. If there is an improvement with either of these then it is a software/app issue.

This is your fourth iPad as in you've exchanged it already three times before?

If you can't charge the iPad to 100% then it definitely seems to be a hardware problem if I'm honest. You're battery drainage pattern is really concerning. Safari can drain battery if you visit sites that have complicated scripts running constantly but really I'd take it to an Apple Store and get them to check it out.

Both of these have been done already, actually more than once. Some times it charges to 100%, sometimes only to 96% (always 96%) and when at 96% the plugin charger (yes, i am using the apple supplied charger) is hot enough to cook eggs on (if i could find small enough eggs). Other times, when not connected to a charger it wont drain, but other times it will drain. In all instances there are no apps running in the background.

These and many other things have been tried and tested.

Hope there is another solution.

Further more, I am impressed by the iPad Pro, the processing speed is amazing compared to the iPad Air 2, im also loving the 4 speakers, as a music producer this has been an excellent upgrade, but there is something seriously wrong with the battery, apple have offered to refund but have said I can not buy another.

Sorry about that, It's not my 4th iPad Pro 10.5, but the 4th ipad I have owned in 6 years.

I've been to the apple store (and spoken to many people in Apple about this.) The customer service support is pretty weak. Have been passed around to many people. When i first rest the iPad to its factory settings, i didn't even open any apps. i just left it. This was the advice of the apple support team. It was 100% before I left for work. 70% when i got back from work maybe 4-5 hours later. Before i went to bed, I plugged in the charger, the following morning, after 8 hours, it was at 96%, and the charger roasting hot.

I've told apple this, they said its a software/backup problem. Lets run a diagnostic test (again!!)

Apologies for the early post, having re-read it, it would read like i am on my 4th iPad Pro 10.5 (but this is the first)

I'm guessing you're not within your return period. Use it without putting your backup on after the restore just to rule out a corrupted backup scenario. If you still have the same issue then take it back and hopefully they'll replace it.

Quail eggs, perhaps. :p

If it won't charge beyond a specific point then this points to a defective battery. Apple will swap this out for you. It should charge fairly quickly up to 90 odd % but then dramatically slow down for the last few % as it trickle charges to capacity but it should still always go to 100%.

Yes, I agree. I left the iPad Pro at 96% for at least 2 hours. Decided to plug into the macbook and power from USB, maybe 15 minutes later it was at 100%.

Apple are determined to say it is a software problem. They won't acknowledge it is a hardware problem.

But i have no idea. I'm just a user. Im at the point where I will donate the ***** thing to apple just so they can pull their fingers and iphones out of their arse and look in to the problem properly.

Have you tried just charging purely from the Macbook to see if there is a difference? Any chance it could be the charger that is defective?

I had the same issue with the iPhone 7 when it first came out. Used to loose 20-30% overnight even when the phone was shut down! Took it back to the apple store and got new one no problem. If you still within the return period just take it back and return or ask them to replace. They should be able to do this.

Everything you're describing is indicative of a defective battery. To be frank, I'm genuinely surprised Apple support isn't taking care of it.

Set it up as a new iPad with no software installed. Just reset and activate it and then use Safari to see if the issue recurs. It'll be a lot harder for Apple support to claim "software" if you're only using what's natively included with the operating system.

Also, be nice when you're talking to them. It helps, even if it's frustrating.

SERIOUSLY, you have a faulty device. This thing is a BEAST with an incredible battery life. There is something wrong with it and you’re losing a lot by giving up on the iPad Pro 10.5 altogether because of that crappy experience.

Return it to Apple while you’re still in the first 15 days. And buy another one :)
[doublepost=1504321832][/doublepost]How come they told you you could NOT buy a new one? This is utterly bull****. I had a cracking noise in my iPhone 5C that I took to the Apple store in the third day using the device - the store representative told me to give it back during the 15 day period and I bought another one immediately there with him. They can’t force you not to buy another iPad Pro 10.5! I’d even report whoever told you that to Apple! That is a false statement.

I purchased this on an education offer, they said something about one offer per customer, or something similar. I am also based in China, maybe there are different rules to the promotion/shop sales/support here.

Anyway, once again i woke up this morning to a non-charging iPad Pro 10.5, this time i left it connected to the macbook (the macbook was connected to a power supply, it had at least 6 hours to charge to 100% from 70%. Woke up this morning to 95% (message = not charging). No background apps running, all location services switch off.

Again i spoke with apple support, there advice was to do a soft reset and this should make it work. (of course it did, but its still an iPad that is not working as it should do). I told them i wanted it changed. They booked an GB appointment for me. At the store they suggested they do a deep test (why I had to wait 10 days for this to be suggested I don't know). However, whilst showing them what apps I had been using (the power brick got very hot). They suggested to replace the ipad, but they wanted to replace only the ipad (a refurbished one, because it was beyond the 15 days), I told them this was not good enough, I have raised this issue 5 days after I purchased the product and have spoken to upwards of 10 apple support people about the problem. They agreed to give me a new, in the box iPad.

So, I am now with a new iPad, the guys in the store are very helpful, but the online and telephone support team are not. I appreciate it's preferable to visit a store, but in my location there aren't many stores and its not always easy to get to the store at a convenient time. Also, you are trusting the remote support teams advice, which in this case, is to reset the device to factory setting and wait 2-3 days to see if the problem continues - after a few times of this, running diagnostics, then different diagnostics, waiting for callbacks (all the time speaking to different people) this will easily get you close or over the 15 day period.

I am glad to hear that many people are enjoying their iPad Pro 10.5. It is amazing, as an iPad music producer, I am more than pleased with the processing power, the speakers, the graphics etc...

I guess I was unlucky to pick up a device that wasn't working to the expectations. But I do feel that the apple support function is just working from a script designed around plausible denial, pushing you past, or close to, the 15 day period (until such time as too many complaints have been received).

anyway, thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.

Fingers crossed I can recover the past 6 years work and have a fully functional iPad Pro.

Is it set up as a new device or did you set up from a backup?

If you are referring to the original iPad Pro 10.5 (before the replacement), both. Tried to restore from back up and also set-up as new. What's your thinking? Would be good to get an idea on why this happened if it wasn't a hardware defect.

So the question i have now is how best to get my apps and data on to my iPad.

Some people say, don't restore from backup.

Do i download the apps via iTunes/MacBook or do i reinstall from the AppStore, what about the data. A lot of my data (say 6 years worth of music production, synth and drum patches, propriety file formats, midi files, samples) can not be saved to the cloud, so is stored in backups.

Furthermore, what is a backup for, how does a back up to the iCloud differ from iTunes/Macbook. I have a lot of files- say 100GB, how do you manage this in the cloud? What do you/would you do if you can't access cloud services often?

Any thoughts on these questions?

Just a few thoughts.
1. 96% is not uncommon. When I have my iPad Pro 12.9” (1st gen bought when it came out) on power for days on end, it will charge to 96% and stay there. If it’s been out for the day and it is down to 20% it will charge to 100% again.

2. The power adapter might get hot. Really hot when it is charging at full power. I have had it many times, it still worries me, but I haven’t damaged one yet with it. They seem to be ok with it.

2.b. If you want faster charging, buy a 29W USB-c and a USB-c—>lighting cable. Bloody expensive, Bloody fast charging. If you use a 12W charger it might discharge faster under heavy load then the 12W can charge. I certainly thin that on the 12.9 the 29W charger should have been standard. Both the 10.5 and the 12.9 now can fast-charge with the 29W. I’ve bought 3 of them (two at home for charging both the 12.9 and 10.5 and one for quickly topping up the road).

3. It really looks like something on your device got stuck. It’s almost always something software related. It’s almost always some app that does this.

4. With your new iPad, restore it, use it like you did before.

5. If you get the same behaviour, completely erase the iPad, restore to factory settings and don’t start from a back-up, just download any app again from the App Store, just like you’re a first time Apple user. Usually iCloud data doesn’t effect it, but all the settings, from mail, apps, reminders, localisations services etc. Etc. Should be entered again. It is a pain in the proverbial place, but might be the only way to get rid of it.

My experience with Apple has been great so far, but I think your phone support experience has been substandard. Part of the problem is they keep extensive records of your device/case and when the first decided it was a software problem, you’re basically stuck with this.

I seriously hope this new device will solve your problems. the 10.5 is a wonderful device and IMHO the best tablet there is!
Full sized keyboard according to my fingers, super nice screen, ProMotion, huge disk size (512Gb) 4Gb ram, really bright, good battery life (when you don’t put it on 100% brightness :) ) blistering fast and big enough to write well on. Just like the paper notepads I used back in the days.

I regularly get over 10 hours of usage per charge out of my 10.5" iPad Pro, and I use some pretty power hungry apps on mine (including some music writing/recording apps). I also never swipe up to close any of my apps running in multitasking, as this is something that really should not need to be done unless a specific app is malfunctioning.

Hopefully your new unit is the same. I've had several iPads in my life, but the 10.5 has blown them all away in terms of battery life. I recently bought the 29w power brick and a USB-C to Lightning cable and that made the whole setup even better--Yesterday I went from 1% to 100% in just over 2 hours.
