12 grams is 0.42 ounces. Do you really think you could feel that difference?

Of course not
Did you read my post immediately above what you quoted?

I’m trying to point out to the person talking about the weight difference how insignificant it is

yes, on my ipad mini 4 the pointer shutters/jumps, it is not smooth...i bet is the ios13+120hz hardware that makes the 11" ipp a lot better UI for the pointer

You don’t need 120hz to have a smooth cursor

I wouldn't be surprised if the iPad Pro doesn't get updated until early 2020.

With the decision to finally branch out with iPadOS and let things diverge from the iPhone over time it could be interesting to see what hardware decisions they make on the iPad that might go hand-in-hand with software changes just for iPadOS.

Reasonable minds will disagree about upgrade strategy, but I have to say with iPad the hardware is so capable that unless you just want a new one or your old one literally isn’t doing something you want to do, I always advise to just hang onto it and keep using it because it just keeps working great.

I’m totally blown away with how happy I am with my iPhone SE and iPad Pro 9.7, both of which are many years old now and simply do everything I want perfectly.

I get what you're saying but for me when I go back to my 9.7 IPP it's painful after being used the 11.

Yes, even the 10.5" is a big improvement over my 9.7" iPad Air 2 in terms of size.

One of the big changes is the ability to use a full sized keyboard cover with it. Much more pleasant to type on than the various keyboard available that fit the size of the 9.7" models.

The 10.5" and 11" use about the same sized keyboards since the 10.5" (with bezel for Touch ID) is about the same width in landscape mode as the 11" (without that bezel).

You mean 2020 ;)
Yes. Doh!

Nothing wrong with that - it's your money!

I just don't see the value in paying out of pocket $600 of fresh cash to go from my 9.7 to 11 to do precisely what I do already with my 9.7".

I just see no reason for the upgrade for my usages yet.
If I were an Apple Pencil person, I can imagine I would have upgraded already (as one example).

Well, that's just it. In my case, going to the 10.5" with full-sized keyboard changed how I use my iPad. I wasn't convinced it would, but it did. YMMV.

Regarding weight, it's not just about whether you could tell the difference of 0.5 ounce. It's that your body will be able to tell afte x hours/minutes of holding - your wrists can sure tell! I want my tablet as light as humanly possible.

Now, many requirements are in opposition - but such is life. I'd like it as light as possible, but at the same time I'd like a long battery life... a tough ask from a physics point of view. Still, that's what I'd like.

So looking forward to the next iPP - if *I* was making a list of "wants":

1)Lighter
2)Longer battery life
3)More connectivity
4)More memory - this is almost unlimited.

And... I think I can get most of these - except maybe "lighter" and "more connectivity".

And really there is no limit to some of these. Like those stories about how "X amount of memory should be enough for anybody" supposedly said by Bill Gates wrt. to some aburdly small amount. It's never enough. Never. Maybe to you it is, I'm happy to get more.

Example - I have a ton of movies and music on external drives - many, many TBs. I want them locally. I don't want to "access" them through a network, or have them in "the cloud". I want to take my iPad with me, and have all my movies even if I'm somewhere where there is no access to external networks. If that's 10TB, or 100TB, I promise you there's someone and not just a few, who would be happy to get it. It may seem absurd today, but anything above 128MB seemed absurd back in the day too. So don't judge what other people need. And you'll find it surprising, that suddenly you find a TON of people want it. That's how you get standard memory expanding in size on phones and tablets. Because people inevitably want more to store photos, films, music, documents whatnot. Even if they stream.

So too here. No amount of battery life is too long. I like to read - and f.ex. the kindle can last on one charge for month(s). I like that. I would not protest and cry if the iPad lasted for 2 days on a charge, or 2 weeks, or 2 months or 2 years.

It's never enough.

You can never have enough memory, enough battery life, and so on. And guess what - technology by and large has been delivering.

So I personally want more of the basics I mentioned above: more storage, more battery life, lighter yet stronger, better screen yet and so on. It never ends. And I'm happy it's so. If you are happy with less, more power to you. I like more. YMMV.

I have the IPP 9.7 and have thought about upgrading also. The main thing that had held me back is the threads with all the screen touch problems on the 2017 and 2018 iPads. Knock on wood, my 9.7 works just fine and I would hate to spend money on a problem.

There's always going to be some "gate" issue that is hyped. There's 48 pages of the "bendgate" issue stickied that could also make some people hesitant even though I consider it a non-issue. I took back my 12.9 IPP because I didn't like the size. Touch issues would be a serious defect and would definitely justify a return more than my reason. You could just purchase from a place with a solid return policy like I did.

We probably won’t see an upgrade until 2020, but I think that will be a big upgrade. Basically the hardware will be built around iPadOS 14 which will likely be an even bigger departure from iOS. I am very excited for the first round of iPad hardware designed specifically for the OS fork.

Thats the assumption but with apple the trends have been very hind sided as of late with their releases.

The problem with returning is that posters say the problem doesn’t show up for a few months. I don’t know of anyone in the US that allows returns after months of use. And I don’t feel confident with Apple taking care of issues after the 14 day return return. I’ve been a huge Apple fan for the last 15 years but it seems like lately, every release has some kind of major problem. I had major problems with 2 Maxes last fall and purchased them 6 weeks apart. With both, the problems were right at the start so they were returned within the 14 day window. And the genius’ at Apple all were, “huh, never heard of that”. I called one of them out on that as I had spoken with her about the same issue on the initial phone.

Eventually I will need to update the 2016 IPP. Maybe the next ones coming out.

I have a 10.5 which I bought because I thought it was a big enough design change that they wouldn't change again. Obviously the 11" came out and that was a huge change, so was pretty disappointed with that.

Since then I've been itching to get the 11", but truth be told I've been very happy with my iPad. I use it almost as a full laptop replacement for personal use (I do my work on a company-provided laptop).

For me, as long as there isn't a real need to upgrade, I'm going to wait another generation and maybe go to the 12.9" next (assuming iPadOS turns out to be a significant step forward).

I have the feeling that there will be an unexpected spec bump when iPadOS comes out.

As unexpected as the MacBook Pro upgrades of this year.

I'm going to the US in October and I will wait until then, hopefully the new OS will be out :D

They've really impressed me with Applecare. I had a Mac laptop where the battery "bulged out" and bent the door that held it in on the bottom. It was a little over two years old, which meant the Applecare warranty was over. They still covered the repair for free.

I honestly think they are pretty good with obvious and easy to solve one offs. It’s the bigger issues that they tend to deny and deny until they can’t - like the laptop keyboard fails.

Don’t wait unless you’re cool with waiting 9-12 months.

Also the next iPad won’t be a major upgrade. At least not as radically as the 2nd and 3rd Gen iPad Pros.

The iPad Pro to watch our is for the 5th Gen in 2021 which will come with 5G and MicroLED. But possibly at a higher price point.

I would not be surprised to see the 2020 iPad Pros go 6 GB across the board.

I would be shocked to see micro-LED in 2021 though.
