Over the weekend there were a couple of occasions where I opened my folio cover, unlocked the iPad, and then tried to open an app in the dock. The screen registered my touch as the app icon increased in size slightly every time I tried opening it, but it wouldn’t actually launch. Then trying to open other apps in the dock does the same. If I then try to rotate from portrait to landscape, it won’t rotate either. Restarting the iPad fixes the issue.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I've had this happen with the CNN app. It will launch, and then instantly close. Happening on my iPhone as well. Been using the News app instead.

Do you have a glass screen protector on it?
Yes I do. Waiting for the media devil protector to arrive later this week.

I was a little surprised given the screen seemed to register the touch but the app wouldn’t launch. And then the immediately subsequent issue with the screen rotation seemed to suggested something else may be at play?

I am however really looking forward to getting rid of this protector though!

some former ipad pro’s has this issue - you can see that the touch is registered but nothing happens. it seems to be only an issue with pro models.

if you see it happens again, try to reset the ipad (with itunes) and see if that helps. if not, then i quess the same touch problem is affecting also newer models than only 2016 and 2017 models. (search ”ipad pro touchscreen problem” or so...) unfortunately apple doesnt acknowledges it (yet), so not sure if apple even investigates the reason to this behaviour.

Thanks. It’s been a few days now and no issues. Maybe just a hiccup.

Will try resetting through iTunes as you suggest above if it happens again.
