More like a side grade at best. If you prefer bigger displays, then it's a downgrade.

It depends on your use case scenario.

Unless you want more portability or a different color, I would stick with the 3rd gen 12.9". To me, there's nothing the Air offers to draw me away from any Pro model iPad.

If you don’t think you’ll miss the 12.9” size, the Air 4 will be a good, portable tablet. I think it comes down to how you use it.

I do most of my computer work on a 15.4” MacBook Pro, so the smaller iPads are great for portability. If I didn’t have the MBP, I’d probably have a 12.9 iPP.

By the time you sell your 12.9 Pro and pay for the Air, I’m not sure you will have saved any money. Just weigh your options. There’s not really a bad choice here.

Stating the obvious here, unless your current 12.9 is naked the cost comparison shouldn’t merely be based upon the monthly payment. There’s undoubtedly a cost associated with not being able to use keyboards/cases specific to each model. Perhaps I’m in the minority but I would never pay near retail for a used device so based upon that assumption there will be a loss taken on the sale of the 12.9 and if any model specific accessories are involved those will be sold at a loss too.

If you can trade one for the other without losing any money, and saving that 20 is more important than the larger ProMotion screen, then go for it. If all you do is regular computing stuff like mail, browsing, watching videos, and not complex games then the Air will feel a little snappier, but if you edit photos and videos the Pro will be faster at those tasks and the Pros screen is nicer for watching videos.
