Hey,

My iPad Pro 12.9 3rd Gen won't charge anymore from the USB-C port.
While its still had juice I was able to verify that USB-C data working when connected to MacBook but will not charge.

I am wondering instead of attempting a repair which will set me back at least $600, based on Apple, is there a way to charge it via the three dots on the back (smart connector)?

Any other ideas?

With the Smart Keyboard, but if the port is working for data and not charging could it be not a connector problem? (I'm not sure, just wondering)

Thanks!

I tried different chargers on it, and restored it from DFU mode before the battery drained.
Not sure if there is anything else I can do.

Apart from the keyboard it will be interesting to see if there is any other accessory or dock that provides charging via the three dots.

1. Have you examined the port? Is the interior post straight? Is there no debris?

2. Have you tried a different cable?

3. Have you tried a different charger? Is the charger Apple certified?

I had to send in an iPad Pro for replacement because the post in the charging port was bent.

Interesting way to troubleshoot but sure if you want to try theta route why not. Eat success either way I just hope it’s not something inside the device stopping it from charging.

1. Yes, no debris, seems straight, examined with microscope.
2. Yes
3. 4 different macbook chargers that confirmed working.

Have you tried it on a MK? Sounds like you haven't but I wouldn't stump up the cash to see if it works - go to an Apple store and ask to put it on one first.

I have the same problem. The Applestore ran diagnostics on my 12.9pro and confirmed that the USB-C port is ok for data but power is not getting through. As the warranty ran out 23 days ago they quoted me over £800 for the repair !!!!

£800 for a new $2 USB port?
Scandalous. As these ports cost peanuts and are extremely poor quality they should make them easily replaceable.

Have you looked at an iFixIt teardown and is the port one of those where you have to dismantle the entire iPad in order to get to it? I would look into how much a third party repairer would charge to replace the port.

The same happened to me with Samsung, the USB C pins for power delivery died but in that case the pins for slow 5 volt charging (USB A with no quick charge) still worked. Data and power don't use the same pins so one can die and the other still work... They refused to service the device under warrantly because apparently I had applied too much pressure on the charging cable (= used the device while plugged in), which broke some pins....
