there is/will be blooming. No discussion there. The only thing will be how visible it will be.

Lets just hope its barely visible 😉

tired to take a video for you but got lens flare from my iPhone and made it look like there was blooming when there wasn’t

Thanks, everyone, for taking time to share you’re experience. My usage lies in text and regular YouTube videos. If a noticeable difference is seen in reading, I could see myself making the 12.9” upgrade from my 10.5” iPP.

How about reading forums or, say, a Kindle book inside and outside?
 
How is the new braided cable? I can’t wait for it to come to all Apple products.
 
so is the shadow on the edge actually defect? ie. not meant to be there? I kinda understood that that is the small trade off

The screen seems deeper than the glass and the edges do seem weird to me, something doesn’t seem right, also brightness is about the same as last years one and I’m not blown away or wow by the screen I expected more
 
Have any comparisons been done with the 8GB model vs the 16GB model? Austin Mann’s 16GB M1 iPad Pro shuffled through Lightroom photos at blazing speed. I’m curious how the 8GB model fares, and where the 16GB model would outshine it.

Also, there was virtually no lag when bringing any old app session to the forefront from multitasking with the 16GB model. Just curious if the 8GB is similar.

* I pre-ordered the 8GB and it should be here this weekend.

No one needs 16gb lightroom is fine with 8gb just used it, 16gb on an iPad is purely to make people up sale and spend more money on the higher tiers, even macos doesn’t need 16gb

Every mini-led panel will have blooming does not matter if its a Samsung TV or iPad Pro. But the pros of mini-led outweigh the cons. OLED has issues like burn in or bad saturation or tinting issues.

As long as the blacks are black, its good for me.

That makes no sense lol. Yeah OLED can get burn in…maybe 2-3 years down the line if you are a heavy user. Blooming is something you’re gonna have to deal with every time you turn the screen on.

i have a 12 pro max from the day of launch and there is definitely no green tint. Yeah people had the issue but it’s not every device. Not all OLEDs get it…it’s just a manufacturer mistake. And you think OLED has bad saturation? i don’t even know what to say to that.

if you want blacks that are black then Mini LED is worse than OLED. It’s a shame they went with Mini LED as it’s got a lot of issues. The only real negative to OLED is burn in and again that might happen if you abuse it.

I just got my iPad Pro 12.9 inch today and managed to watched an episode of "For All Mankind" on Apple TV in HDR.

These are my initial impressions:

HDR on the new iPad Pro looks great. It does add greater immersion when you are watching HDR content. Blacks are truly black and it almost feels like you are watching on an OLED panel. I used to skip the opening credits of "For All Mankind" but not any longer. I can now appreciate the true blacks and the pinpoint brightness. Colors are punchy but not too saturated. Those who have been watching a lot of HDR content will definitely appreciate the screen that comes with the new iPad Pros. It really does feel like watching on a flagship TV panel.

About that blooming...

There is no going around this issue. Blooming is evident in certain situations but its not terrible. The only time I can see blooming being terribly obvious is if there are white texts on a black background. This is quite evident (but not annoyingly so) if you turn on subtitles while watching HDR videos. But in the grand scheme of things, if you look at the entire scene, be it dark or bright, blooming isn't that obvious. Blooming is less obvious if you watch HDR content on a brightly lit room. I don't think I am explaining it well here, you just have to see it for yourself.

So if viewing youtube in dark mode - the comments section is going to look like a Christmas light show?

This year I was planning to move completely to iPad for my computing needs, and was all set to get the 1 TB 11 inch model for portability but I’ve had a last minute change of heart and opted for the 256 GB 12.9 inch as I’m not fully convinced yet that I can make the switch. I was also disappointed that XDR didn't make it to the smaller model.

I have to say that I’m in love with how nice the display looks, especially when viewing HDR content.

I’m hoping that when the next gen iPads are released, the 11 inch will get the XDR display and iPad OS is more advanced for pro use. Then I can finally ditch my Mac.

All Pentile OLED displays are susceptible to green tint at angles. You might not notice it but it exists. It’s because there are twice as many green subpixels. The subpixels are either RG or BG, instead of the normal RGB. This is not a manufacturing mistake but rather an inherent limitation of Pentile OLED.

I suppose that's how mini LED screens look? Tried to take a pic of the edges but it's too hard to capture on camera. Maybe I need to get an eye test LOL

Only took a few photos cos the overall design is identical to the last few years and there's nothing much to rave about LOL

And yes I've installed a screen protector already. Plan on applying the dbrand swarm skin soon.

I still have the original 12.9. I wish I could afford the 2021.
 
I am very impressed by the display, less glow than I expected (can only slightly see it in worst case scenarios if I look for it), much brighter even not in HDR. Had to turn the brightness down below 50% even when the sun was up compared to the 2020 I used before which sat higher than that all day.
 
Shame there wasn't an option to switch from dynamic to static LED lighting. Would be nice to have zone lighting for movies but switch to static backlighting for reading to avoid blooming.

Or, better yet, have that iPad do that automatically. Might just be something they do, who knows?

Not exactly. If you look closely, the dark mode on the Youtube app isn't completely black. Its more dark grey. So that means most of the Mini LED are gonna be lit up to some extent around the text to achieve the dark grey effect. And so the halo effect is dramatically diminished to the point you don't really notice at all. Reducing brightness definitely helps. I don't think anyone reads white text on black at maximum brightness.
