Thanks for your comments, much appreciated. I have never owned an Ipad or Macbook with an M chip. Shows how old my Apple devices are! Given these items are £££ I believe I might as well go for the latest chip (M5) and benefit from a few more years software support as the M4 will be outdated/discontinued that much earlier.

In your opinion, do you think 256GB is more than enough for a basic user such as myself? I would be mainly doing web browsing, emails, reading newspapers etc and streaming (hence why I want the Pro model for the OLED screen). 512GB offers me that added peace of mine but I don't think I would make use of the additional storage space. Even if I bought the Microsoft office package so I can use Word and Excel here and there. One day I hope to upgrade my MBP but I think the ipad is the first to be upgraded!

The 4GB base RAM increase in the M5 is a nice benefit. Not sure how much that's really *worth* though.
Yes I noticed that. Faster charging to 50%. Otherwise same screen tech, physical size etc. Just some tweaks to the software/hardware it seems mainly.

I ended up going with the M4 on the Costco deal. Got the 1TB for $100 less than the open box 512GB M5 I previously was going to get, so less $$, double the storage, 30% more RAM and nano texture in exchange for rapid storage, wifi 7 and slightly faster RAM.

That is an impressive spec on the M4. How are you finding it? I don’t think I would use up 512Gb let alone 1TB! I guess you really wanted the nano texture display?

Here in the UK we don’t have Costco.

The nano texture display was more just a nice add on. It wasn’t something I was seeking out (I was fine adding a matte screen protector), but I got the 13” 1TB with the nano texture for $1,099. The base 256GB 13” M5 is $1,299. I doubt I will ever use all of the space either (only currently using about 200GB with some of my files from work I’ve marked to keep on device), but my previous 2018 iPad was constantly not being able to keep more than an app or two loaded in the background without needing to reload. So since I keep the iPads for so long I wanted to get the 1TB model to get the 16GB of RAM to help avoid a similar issue (to the best of my current ability) in the future. Same spec’d iPad in the M5 was $1,100 more than what I paid for the M4.

Too bad on no Costcos in the UK. It is a pretty amazing store and they are running some great deals right now on their remaining M4 iPad stock.

Hi - is the nano screen worth it? Do the colours still look vibrant with good contrast, detail etc? Frustrating you need a very high spec (1/2TB) model to have it, which seems a little unfair!

We have a website called Backmarket.co.uk which sell second hand devices - worth having a look. I have never bought from them but seem to be making big noise in the market with their offers. An M4 Pro 13", wifi only, 1TB with Nano Texture is coming in around £1,250 - in 'Excellent' condition, see screen shot below for description of this, taken from Backmarket website.

For the same spec with M5 chip, brand new it would cost £1,999, another screen shot from a reputable company here in UK. That is £750 more to pay!

I can get the M4 model with 1TB (massively overkill for my needs) with 16GB RAM, WIFI, in 'excellent' condition for around £1,250 from Backmarket.co.uk - see below. To get this spec with the M5 chip, it would cost another £750 more!

In the UK we definitely do have Costco! I would look out - they've been doing similar crazy deals here for M4 iPads but they appear randomly and sell out within a few hours. Sometimes you can get one for more than half it sold for originally.

Heavens - ok will take a look. I was looking on their US website earlier today 😂! Pls send over any links you think might be relevant.

I’ve never bought from Costco (here in the UK). Has anyone on here bought from them (for iPads etc)?

I've bought an iphone from there. Costco is one of the more reliable retailers, including in the UK. You need a membership though. When you purchase it, it comes either next day or day after.

I generally go to costco every two weeks here too but have not seen the deal in person in their stores.

They have deals as noted above but it's random. I don't see any right now on their online store.

Is it free to be a member? That’s good you recommend them. I usually buy from John Lewis when it comes to expensive electrical items due to their 2 year peace of mind warranty (and their customer service is pretty good).

Thanks for checking. I did the same and nothing jumped out at exceptional value.

about two weeks ago, they had deals were you could take 600 - 900 off the current price of those ipads. I believe costco's warranty is very very good. It's not free to be a member - it's about £40-50 I believe.

Just one more thing, I noticed today…Curry’s has a 13 inch m4 nano with cellular for £1295 today. I went for it. I still am unsure but I won’t open till I am. I actually am hesitant about the Nanotexture! I wanted the 1tb and cellular though…

Ahh I see. Thank you for clarifying. A shame you have to pay to be a member.

Wow that it is a good price. For m5 with same spec I’m thinking it would be around £2,000. I’ve never owned a cellular iPad before. Are you not going to open and enjoy it?

Performance wise do you think the 16GB makes any difference for basic users (myself included)?

For basic ipad pro users such as myself (mainly doing web browsing, streaming series/films, reading news, emailing) is it worth spending more ££ and getting a 'higher spec' IPP such as the boosted RAM which comes with the 1TB M4 model? Or would a base M5 256/512GB model do the job just as well? The latter being more new will last another few more years over the M4 model I think. Longevity can only be a good thing with these very expensive devices.

Anyone on here recently bought the IPP 13" M5 variant? I am still on the fence as to either paying a premium for the M5 or buy a more powerful/higher spec M4 model (which would likely be £500-700 cheaper). M5 will last a few more years and has a better spec with software/hardware and a bit more RAM for the basic model. However, I do not know if I will notice any difference between the two chips with my basic usage/requirements? As long as it loads websites fast as my current Ipad Air 2 is getting rather slow at loading/buffering etc (even my kids tell me this)!

Not sure about the UK, but in the US you don’t have to be a Costco member to purchase from Costco online. They just charge non-members a small fee (something like 3-5% of the cost of the item).

I’m not sure about things potentially lasting for the M5 multiple years beyond the M4. They are pretty close in benchmark results and only slightly different in RAM frequency.

for a basic ipad user, you definitely don't need higher spec and can argue that you don't even need an m4 ipad. That being said, given the deeper discount, there's nothing wrong with getting an ipad pro and enjoying it. for things like watching netflix, streaming, etc, that screen is amazing. the weight is great for every day life, the screen is amazing for reading etc. these are things normal people do and you will notice a difference.

will you notice a difference between M4 and M5? No. I really really don't think so. even if M5 lasts longer it will only be by about a year and that also in about 6 years.

what will help in a few years though, is the extra RAM that you get in the 1tb model and how you'll notice is the screen refreshes if you have many tabs open. Those are the sort of things.

i am not by any means a pro user but I don't mind admitting, i enjoy the screen and weight for everyday life!

Personally, I have the 1TB cellular M1 iPad Pro and I'm still very happy with it. I haven't noticed any slowdowns.

I just ordered the 1TB cellular nano M4 because the Costco deal was too good to pass up. Absolutely no regrets going for the M4 over the M5 given the almost $1000 price difference.

Note, I wanted the 1TB for my comic collection. Even with 512GB, I had to wrestle deciding which stuff to offload. With 1TB, I no longer have that issue even if I download some videos for added entertainment. I think I'm currently at 650GB full.
