Inside of a bowl of cereal
I was thinking maybe Apple could maybe have the iPads like iPhones:
  • Smaller iPad Pro- (10.5-11.5) with bezels and a home button
  • Bigger iPad Pro- (12.9-14) with bezels and a home button
  • iPad Mini Pro- bezeless, FaceID
Just an idea. I’m not all to crazy on FaceID and a home button, but I’m not the only consumer and it’s okay.
Maybe there could be a home button AND FaceID for people to try?

Edit: Okay. Mini is dead, moving on.

Not going to happen. Afraid there will be no Mini.

I’m still thinking Apple may use the mini to test the water

Why a bezel-less one? Apple should stop behaving as sheep following the trend started by someone else... Maybe Samsung? I like Apple's bezels it's like a trademark I hope they get rid of this whole stupid idea of bezel-less iPhones and what not.

iPad Mini - no rumours. Mac Mini - no rumours. iPods - no rumours. See the pattern? These are zombie products, still for sale but as good as dead.

With a rumoured ‘cheaper’ 6.5-inch iPhone on the way, the iPad Mini is of little interest to Apple.

Line up that makes most sense to me is:

9.7” = discontinued

10.5” with home button replaces 9.7”, has A10 processor, 2GB RAM, Camera upgrade to single 12MP/4K 30fps Camera, and is simply less powerful, stereo speakers, no laminated screen, and no pencil support.
Comes in New Gold, Silver, and New Space Gray.
Starting Price:
$299.99-319.99 for 32GB
$399.99-419.99 for 128GB

Then we get the high end iPad Pros...

11.3”
Running A11X or A12X 7nm chip, no home button, dual 12MP/4K 60fps camera, Face ID, new Apple Pencil, much slimmer bezels. Improved sound and screen features (louder more bass focus speakers, improved pro-motion and higher pixel count.)
Comes in new Gold, Silver, and New Space Gray.

Starting Price:
$699.99–64GB (possible bump to 128GB)
$849.99–256GB
$999.99–512GB

12.9”
Running A11X or A12X 7nm chip, no home button, dual 12MP/4K 60fps camera, Face ID, new Apple Pencil, much slimmer bezels. Improved sound and screen features (louder more bass focus speakers, improved pro-motion and higher pixel count)
Comes in new Gold, Silver, and New Space Gray.

Starting Price:
$849.99–64GB (possible bump to 128GB)

People were saying that they would like bezeless, so that’s what I wrote. I like bezels on tablets, but whatever.

Nice post. Makes a lot of sense. Pretty realistic roadmap too IMO.

I’ll add a twist. Exactly what you outlined except next year we see either a bezelless 9.7 or an edge to edge mini (pretty much the same thing. A slight increase in the currentmini physical dimension gets you to 9.7) that’ll be a high end pro option with pencil support.

Would love this ipad pro lineup:

* 12.9" becomes 13.5" bezel-less ipad pro
* 10.5" becomes 11" bezel-less ipad pro
* 7.9" ipad mini becomes 8.5" bezel-less ipad pro

Bam! Cover all bases. I think if Apple did that, i would get the 8.5" ipad mini pro for travel, and the 13.5" ipad pro for at home work.

I really can see this happening within a year. This year we get one new iPad X (11 inch ish). The 10.5 and 12.9 get internal upgrades like the iPhone transition. By next spring phase out the 10.5, take out bezels on 12.9 and do the 8.5 thing on the bottom end.

9.7 “old style” with home button sticks around like the iPhone SE of iPads for budget education etc for 4 more years.

Looking at the weird as hell patterns Apple has decided to zig zag on lately, my theory is:

Upgraded 10.5 inch and 12.9 inch pros. Mostly internal. Nothing cosmetic.

A new “iPhone X” style iPad that sits right in the middle. Kinda like how iPhone X sits right in the middle of the 8 and 8 Plus, this new iPad will have the X design language and also...an upgrade in price.

And then next year they’ll release an even larger one that’s similar in size to the 12.9 without bezels and that’ll be the lineup.

Go back in time and think about it. When they released the first iPad Pro, it was in one size at a time. The 12.9 was the first “pro” and then next spring they had a 9.7 pro. Then the next big upgrade they upped the size to 10.5 and kept the 12.9. It’s like they keep going back and forth updating one to kinda highlight “this is our new flagship for now. Buy this one!” Letting everyone get excited and buy into it before a new different one comes out.

Psychologically this makes sense because tablets are kind of in a weird place. Not really peaking, but the excitement hasn’t been the same. Growth isn’t what it was. So they need differentiation to make you wanna upgrade to give it that “newness feeling”

2018:

iPad Pro 10.5 and 12.9 looking like they are now with internal upgrades and maybe a new pencil to go with it

An 11 inch pro X to steal the spotlight.

2019:

iPad Pro 11inch

iPad Pro 13.5 (or whatever inch) with new bigger design with an emphasis on really replacing your laptop.

The 10.5 inch is now the budget iPad

I’m with you all the way to the end. Then I digress.

Also agree this year we are iPad X (11”) and updated 10.5 and 12.9 same body. Next year iPad X+

But I believe they will phase out the 10.5 old body. What they’ll do is keep the 9.7 old body as the cheap option and maybe add pencil support.

On the pro low end (size) either a bezelless 9.7 or a mini stretched out to the edges giving us an iPad mini pro. Physical size close to or slightly bigger than the current mini, screen size between 8.5 and 9.7

Time will tell.
