But it really isn’t….. at least on my device. I’ve tried every test, and apart from some blooming in a pitch black room at 100% brightness around some UI overlays, there’s nothing.

The average person wouldn't in a million years notice anything. But then they come here, poor fools. This place scares the crap out of people. 😀 But in a way it's constructive. You get extremes of perception, and it's useful in that way. Just be careful.

Also, there may be production variations. Who knows? It will take time to become clear.

Hey, recently picked up iPad Pro 12.9.

I also have the blooming / light bleed issue when utilizing the iPad in a dark environment scenario. The effect is more prominent on application such as Notes and Netflix. Is this normal? Is this a defect? It seems pretty wide spread for a defect, since it's being reported by many users. Should I just accept the bloom / lightbleed as something normal? I am just seeing if this is acceptable. I don't know how Apple did not predict this occuring in their numerous stress tests and quality assurance. Will this a the debacle such as the butterfly keyboard issues?

Blooming is normal and is a weakness of any display that uses full array local dimming (FALD). Ask anyone with a high -end TV - even the ones costing thousands of dollars will have blooming. It's an overblown issue on this forum because those complaining don't seem to be familiar with this type of display. It's a trade off: you can have deep blacks with some blooming or you can have murky dark gray blacks with no blooming while using in a dark environment. Take your pick.

None whatsoever, the best 2021 Samsung 4K TV has 1,000 Mini-LEDs in a 65” space Vs 12.9” has 10,000 Mini-LEDs in a much smaller space. So I would expect NO blooming at all.
 
this isn’t a case of trying to go “win the panel lottery” it’s a case of the technology being so new and hardware/software not being fully optimized yet as well.
 
Borrow a device with OLED to compare then decide if you can live with it for the premium paid. Or, return it to Apple until they offer a better display.

That what I was thinking as well. Great iPad, just a shame with the mini-LED technology. Might opt for the smaller variant.

Like some others stated above the trade off is the loss of the deep blacks (and super bright whites for that matter). You do really notice the difference side by side in the blacks for sure.

Samsung never releases their numbers so I’m not sure how you came up with 1,000. The TCL and LG mini-leds have tens of thousands so I suspect that your guess is wrong because the Samsungs perform better. Not to mention that Samsung has several tiers of mini-led and I’m sure the highest end 8k has more leds than the entry level 4K and they all have some blooming. Your logic is flawed anyway. When there is a backlight there will be blooming no matter how many lights or how big or small the display is.

You had to start another thread, and couldn't get an insight from the other threads that are full of for/against and juicy discussion? Plenty of info in other threads, and ultimately it's subjective .... If my answer is "absolutely shedloads, I love bloom" and you don't, then my answer is pointless.

I see both sides of this, but the reality is there will always be some form of blooming. So

1) try out the new iPad
2) if the screen is not acceptable, return it in the return window for a full refund.

And that’s about it.

peoples eyes are different, to some of us - the blooming is unacceptable of which there is a 11in IPP or the 2020 IPP as alternatives. For those of US that don’t see an issue or can deal with what blooming there is - great enjoy the new IPP.

I think you and haruhiko need to read before you two come swinging in with overly defensive posts.

30%-45% is not “bumping” the brightness above normal usage. The brightness was not self adjusted, it was in the current brightness in the lighting environment I was in.

I have/had the same problem, I have just started the return today because of this blooming..
because I mostly use my ipad in the evening

Its too annoying for my eyes to look at.. Alot of people can live with its, I just can't

Have ordered the base model 11" instead
 
The blooming didn't bother me too much until I went into the system settings in dark mode while I was laying in bed last night. The local dimming zones look like giant gray bars around white text/graphics which is super annoying. The gray bars are also more prominent when the brightness is turned down lower, not higher. I will live with it but those who say it's not noticeable are lying to themselves (and others).

Why don’t you grow up and tell me the facts then? No need to be a tool…smh at the children on this forum..🙄

Fact: 65” QN90A has 792 dimming zones which would have to mean there is more than 1000 LEDS; the 8k variant has well over 1000 dimming zones.
Fact: numerous review sites have stated the leds number in the tens of thousands on the QN90a and higher
Fact: QN90a received the highest rating ever of any 4K led on RTNGS.com
Fact: QN90a has blooming along with every other FALD display on the market.
