iPad Pro could be 4K, and wireless monitor for Mac Pro

I read an interesting thing in Molly Wood's Mac Pro review for New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/26/t...view-apples-new-mac-pro-computer.html?hp&_r=0

Apple told her that Mac Pro was meant to be "portable."

Hmm... the only portable monitor I can think of is the iPad.

Perhaps iPad Pro could be a wireless monitor for Mac Pro (and 4K)....

Update:
----------------
HDTV resolution is 1920×1080

9.7" iPad Retina resolution is: 2048×1536

So, the iPad already has more resolution than HDTV.

4K resolution (standard) is: 3840x2160

I think it's doable on a larger iPad (iPad Pro).

Would be cool... But it won't happen cuz no iPad will be 4k. Apple doesn't even make anything 4k and the one they try to sell you when you go to by the Mac Pro is 31.5 inch not 13. I don't think we will see a 4k iPad any time in the near future.

At 13" a 4k display would have a dpi of approx 450! Even a retina iPad Mini only has about a 330! I can't see Apple jumping that high at all. Also that would mean switching to a 16:9 display instead of 4:3 like all other iPads. I just don't see it. I could be wrong but that seems crazy.

Could you provide calculations please. I'm curious how you got to the 450 number (not doubting it, just want the straight-line calculation for it).

Edit: I used my phone and fat fingered! It only comes out to 340! Sorry about that!

Thanks for the link to the calculator. It's an awesome resource.

iPhone and as the iPad Mini have a PPI display density of 326.

I used the calculator to calculate a 14.7" diagonal screen size (resolution of 3840x2880) if Apple decides to use a 326 display density. Hmmm... might be too large.

Or just release some Retina Thunderbolt displays... You're expecting to be able to stream 4K wirelessly?

You're right, it might be too much. Maybe they'll have a thunderbolt to lightning connector!!! (Hmm... scratches chin...)

Apple TV is already HD but 4K would equivalent to four simultaneous HD streams... probably will be too much.

Just to pick a nit...

4k is 4096 x 2160 (typically cinema projection)

UHD is 3840 x 2160 (4 times HD exactly)

A lot of tech articles use them interchangeably, but they are in fact two different standards.

(It's worth pointing out that the final specs are still in flux on other aspects)

http://www.avsforum.com/a/the-not-so-subtle-distinction-between-uhd-and-4k

Thanks for clearing that up. I used to see those two different sets of numbers and wonder what was going on.

No, I would rather not have any iPad changing aspect ratio from the more favorable 4:3 to 16:9.

Besides, as long as the iPad is only an 8-bit IPS display, I fail to see the usage you list here. Sure, if it were 10-bit but wouldn't you want a larger screen to begin with?

The difference between 3840 x 2160 (or 4096 x 2160) and 4096 x 3072 is astonishing.

That's something I might actually like: an iPad "smart dock" with Mac internal hardware.

The original Mac ( 128K) was "portable". There were bags you could put the ~20 computer into and take places. ( Somewhere there is a picture of Jobs hauling an early Mac around in one of these bags).

I'm sure the "portable" is all relative to the previous Mac Pro designs. (not against the current Macbook laptop line-up ).

Except that it is relatively extremely poor at taking in video signal from the outside. Other than a viable connector from the outside world to the screen it is a great monitor. (*cough*).

You aren't thinking very hard or broadly. There are lots of smaller, lightweight monitors folks could pick up besides an iPad. You also don't necessarily need to bring the monitor if it is already there. (e.g., fixed studios with monitors in statically in place with computers-technicians that come and go. )

Wireless 4K?? .... yeah perhaps after some heavy duty compression with bleeding edge standards. As a live, uncompressed media stream? Not likely anytime soon.

The biggest issue right now with anything 4K is delivery. You can buy a 4k tv but there isn't a good way to deliver it to the tv. Uncompressed 4k is HUGE, even streaming 4k over a wired network takes a good amount of time. Put that together with air display or whatever you would use and it would be a mess. When my ipad is used to make a third display for my mac its laggy now imagine 4k. So I don't think so, plus 4k is kind of pointless on that size screen because editing anything (videos, photos...) would be a nightmare.

Os x?

It would be cool if when making upgrades before purchasing the iPad you could choose to have it run OS X or iOS 8! :) :apple: :)
