I was looking at the Lightning port in my iPad pro and noticed something earlier. It seems to have pins on both sides of the port. Have all iPads had this or is this a first for the Pro, and could it lead to other things. I checked my iPhone and it only has pins on the one side.

Justed checked my old ipad 4, there are only pins on the bottom side (back side).

From my experiment - the pencil will not fit in my other ipad or iphone port (I was curious if I could charge the pencil in a different device). Only fits in the ipad pro - which would lead me to believe it is different.

iPad Air 2, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6S all have pins on one side. Interesting catch.

Any old lightning port can charge the Pencil. It doesn't have to be the IPP. I charge mine almost exclusively with my iPhone 6 plus.

I even tried sticking an iPod Nano on the end of it and that charged it too.

The pins probably have to do with USB 3 compatibility.
