*sigh* This is just another way of asking the same "is the iPad really Pro" question. How many different ways can this same silly question be asked? The answer to this question is so blindingly obvious: "it depends on who you are and what you're trying to do". Why does this keep getting asked, despite the fact that there's probably hundreds of threads that have pretty much reached this same conclusion?

Understandably . But it doesn't mean that 100 different threads can't be discussed multiple different ways of how somebody is using the iPad over a laptop. It's interesting to see the different programs and applications somebody chooses to use with the iPad that maybe that they can't complete on the laptop or vice versa. We understand that it all depends on the user, but it's interesting to see how the user defined their work development through different platforms through discussion.

The iPad and laptop can only be productive tools based on how someone is ultimately using it. But the iPad is Apple's future reality where it will replace the laptop, which is also Tim Cooks vision.
I'll be pushing daises by the time Tim Cook's vision comes true.

I think that you'll find that almost overnight, apple will put out an AR headset, and with the development tools available for iOS, the ability to get latest iOS on their devices and the massive number of said iOS devices on the planet, almost overnight apple will be come the leading augmented reality application vendor.

AR is the future, and it will be running on your phone or tablet.

Go check out the hololens demos. And then remember that microsoft release early and release stuff that is (compared to the apple equivalent when they get around to release) totally half-assed.

AR is going to be huge, and when apple release their gear it is going to totally blow people's minds.

Wrong. I use computer for coding.

Exactly what I was going to write. I own a web design and internet marketing studio and use mainly Wordpress so slot of HTML, CSS, and PHP is written on my end. I could write all in a note but that wouldn't be effiecent. I still need a Mac to do the work.

If apple would give support to a Magic Mouse for the iPad, that might change things a bit for me.

I do the same, but I use textastic, coda, webtool kit for inspect elements, all on ios. There are tons of coding apps available now if you do a little research. The mouse support isn't really needed for this. I'd only prefer it for some games.

I've asked this question before and I'll ask it again: space why does the iPad need to replace a laptop computer for those doing serious work on their computer? That's what laptops (and desktops are for). this idea that the iPad has somehow failed because it hasn't replaced the Mac is ridiculous. I guarantee you for a lot of people the iPad (or bigger phones) have replaced their laptops. The iPad doesn't need to replace the Mac to be considered a productivity device. And even if it is more consumption than productivity so what? I'm sure a lot of home laptops and desktops are used more for consuming than producing too. Big deal.

Productivity apps are cool but do you really feel you can be more productive than using a computer?

It will be different for everyone, but there's times where I don't want to sit at my desk using my iMac or even with my laptop out. For those times, its amazing what I can get done with an iPad, especially with the Pencil or Smart Keyboard.

In a way, its sorta like the adage about guns for self-defense... if the need arises, a small gun in your pocket is better than a big gun locked in the safe at home.

Up until 4 months ago or so, I would say I did probably use the iPad mostly for consumption (though much of this did include work-related stuff), but upon discovering Lightroom Mobile (which is surprising capable), the iPad has suddenly morphed into an essential part of my post-production workflow. Now, in situations where a laptop would be too conspicuous and/or too much trouble to bring, I can bring along the iPad and get editing work done in my spare time. I even use it at home when I need to continue working but need a break from sitting at my desk.

Haven't touched my MacBook Pro since then, and when it eventually breaks I probably will not replace it. In my particular situation, the combination of desktop computer and iPad works beautifully.

This is exactly what most people here don't seem to think about before starting up yet another thread on this topic--what did MOST people do with their computers before iPads? Not coders or engineers, but just regular every day computer users. They did the exact same stuff that they do with their iPads. Difference now is all the extra cool stuff the iPad brings to the table. I also think a lot of people haven't looked into the available workflows in iOS in a long time. I create lots of "Pro" quality content exclusively on my iPad Pro. But for some reason it seems I have to keep defending myself as to why I go that route 99% of the time instead of my Mac.

I have never owned a laptop, and I sold my iMac about 15 months ago after buying my 1st gen iPP. Now granted, I was not a huge computer user having had iPads since they were first released. I had gotten to where about the only thing I HAD to have my computer for was making books on Shutterfly, and storing pics/videos (and I didn't really need to do that either - was just too afraid to go cloud only).

My daughters both still have iMacs, though one hasn't touched hers in 6 months since getting her iPP, and the other only turns hers on to load her thousands of pics she takes with her phone, so I guess if I was in a real pinch, I could use one of theirs, but I haven't come across anything that *I* do that would require me to use a computer.

I'm a coder, too. Most (but not all) professional coders will no doubt feel challenged by the constraints of an iPad, Pro or not. I'm trialing a 10.5" iPad Pro right now and am pretty darn sure I'd be unhappy trying to do most aspects of my professional work on this thing (my preferred dev rig is my 15" MacBook Pro). I could probably acclimate to the hardware, but there are several things I do regularly that iOS can't currently replace.

Much depends on what you do with a computer. I need full MSOffice, AutoCad and Quickbooks Pro networked and the iPad will not help there but for some the iPad could even be overkill.

The new file system will make my iPad way more useful in the field. Can't wait to see it work.

The iPad is a redundant device for me , my 2in 1 laptop could easily be my one device but doesn't carry around as easy as the iPad .... but then my phone is easier to carry than my iPad but the display is smaller ... I use it mainly for consumption and light productivity tasks . I don't EVER see it replacing a laptop for me

The new iPad Pro may been seen as an entertainment device. However, that doesn't mean that encompasses the same use by others.

Different needs and uses for different people. That is the case with any device. It really is that simple. It doesn't matter if MR member A uses the new iPad one way and disagrees with MR member B's use and subjective definition. The bottom line is that the device is being consumed / used by owners.

The OP is engaging in logical fallacy.

I think that once the ipad can run full desktop programs with ease then I'll start thinking about productivity. Not all of us can make a living creating artwork that people will actually buy at the price we want
Microsoft Surface Pro tablet can be more productive. I have seen some people are leaving iPad Pro for Surface Pro.

Yes. That is because it can run full desktop programs easily. Ipad can't

Here's the problem in all 75,452 threads on this topic--they all result in someone saying "Well, I can't use an iPad for MY work, so that means nobody else can either." Whenever anyone says that, it tells me they're feeling insecure about the future of the Mac environment. Apple made it crystal clear last week that they're still invested in the Mac. Everyone needs to chill.

My ability to work almost exclusively in the iOS environment has nothing to do with anyone else. I just don't like being told I'm lying or that I'm doing it wrong every time I say I don't need a Mac for most things any more.

I agree with your viewpoint with one exception.

For those on here (who are complete strangers to you) who say you are lying, ignorant, troll, Apple hater, or any other negative description, just because you use a product differently, don't let their words bother you. If you do allow it, you are giving strangers power over you and giving validity to their fallacy.

Sometimes it is best to agree to disagree and move on, lest you needlessly bloody your head against a wall.

Picked up a 10.5 pro on thursday and yes, its just the same old iPad for me.
Works great for light use or entertainment when on the move, but thats it.

Even to type this i picked up the mac instead of iPad, its just more natural and efficient.

But the fact that people ARE bringing it up roughly 100x a day lately just shows that the iPad Pro is changing the calculus a bit. People are really starting to wonder if it's possible.
For some yes, for others not. It seems to upset some people, when the other side states their arguement. For me it can't, and that's just the way it is. But the arrogance of the 'never-puters' here has really rub me the wrong way a couple of times.

I'm sure the 'never-puters' can say the same, about the other side.

Aren't people bringing up they can/could because apples marketing department are saying its so?
And marketing existing to sell you more products... Just saying.

I could just a chrome book, or just a phone of anytype....
