Looking at replacing my ancient Ipad Air 2 for a new ipad. The M5 Pro 13 is likely overkill for what I intend to use it for streaming films, emailing, web browsing etc - but I really like the OLED screen and 120hz feature and wondering if 256GB memory is enough or pay another £200 for the 500GB? I use icloud for all my iphone pics so other than downloading films and using Microsoft Office not much else will be saved on the ipad.

Would it be interested to hear anyone's thoughts.

My usage is similar to yours. I have had a 1TB 12.9 M1 for about 3 years and it has about 60GB of stuff on it. I wouldn’t have normally went for 1TB but wanted the 16GB of ram(for some reason 🤔) and got a great refurbished deal on Amazon. At least the base M5 models come with 12GB ram now which is probably perfect.

If you don’t think your current usage wont change in the next year, 256 will work.

256Gb is fine for your usage.

Thanks for all the comments. Does anyone own the new Magic Keyboard? I am tempted..

Does the magic keyboard leave a horizontal line on your screen (which I have read on forums)? Thinking of an ESR screen protector on the 13" M5 for peace of mind with the keyboard.

My wife works in education so have found out that Apple give 10% off give/take so leaning towards the 500GB model for longevity. £1200 for 256GB or £1400 for 512GB (after discount). Leaning towards the latter. 512GB overkill but want the thing to last as long as possible!

I own one, and use it quite infrequently, and it's a mix between "it's the best accessory for the iPad ever" and "why did they not continue the Smart Keyboard line?"

The best thing about Apple's line of iPad keyboard accessories is that they attach to your iPad via magnets, so it's extremely convenient to hook your iPad up to one when you want to do some typing, and then detach it when you are done.

What I liked about the previous Smart Keyboard is that it could easily double as a back cover. I can bring it everywhere, it folds back on itself when I want to use the iPad as a tablet (especially handy when you are standing in a train), and then prop it up when I want to do some typing. It's versatile in that sense.

The annoying thing is that the Magic Keyboard doesn't fold back on itself. So I still have to get another case for my ipad (I also own the Smart Folio), and my Magic Keyboard largely stays at home, but I also use my iPad a lot at work, and so the Magic Keyboard gets used like only 10-20% of the time? It's a great typing experience when I do get around to using it, I hate that it's so thick and bulky that I really only use it on the desk, and it's not cheap either. Also, crumbs drop under the keycaps very easily.

I will say it's made for a very specific type of user. Try buying one from the Apple Store if possible (so you can return it within 2 weeks if it's not for you). I returned my first Magic Keyboard when it was first released in 2020 (for the reasons stated above), but now I have one for my M4 iPad Pro because there's no other option for typing and I detest the Logitech keyboard case even more. 😬

The ESR screen protector works well and installs bubble free.

As to the Magic Keyboard, I have the new black and white models. They are very nice keyboards and i haven’t had any problem using it. I did put a thin silicone keyboard cover on to keep the keys from getting shiny. Even with a screen protector installed, I don’t suggest transporting the iPad connected to the keyboard unless you have a sheet of paper between or a cloth like @sparksd uses. I have the Nano model and i transport both separately.

Doing fine with 256 here, plenty of apps and media still with 59 gb left.

But it all depends on what you’ll be keeping in there, my big stuff are on external hd, so my Affinity projects are externally saved.

If you plan on keeping for long time it might be worth going 512 as it is not upgradable, for me the 256 was enough and I could delete some less used app if I needed more space.

Magic Keyboard is a must if you plan on typing a lot, I tried a double alternatives and while they work well, the me has a big edge in usability. Sure it is a lot more expensive, but it really makes a step up.

I have an m4 pro with 256 and it's plenty. I use it for the same items as you, and just so you know, I was using 128 before with no problems.

Secondly in case it helps, i have the magic keyboard and I agree with what some of the people are saying above. I find it actually takes away from some of the best parts of the device - the weight and feel! I use my ipad differently though. I take it to work everyday in my bad to read news in the morning and I watch shows on the way back home on the train (honestly, awesome). I would find it cumbersome to take it in and out for that. So the keyboard's been in a drawer and I use the Apple Smart Folio more. What i really love though is a Logitech Keys 2 Go 2 keyboard. It's SOOOOO light but works well. I use it around the house all the time. What it's not great at is to use on the lap. But honestly that's it. I generally use my ipad on a table if I need the keyboard though.

Hope this helps!

Looks like 256 should be enough. With streaming and web browsing, don't think storage will fill up. Upgrading from Air 2 will be a huge change!!

When I upgraded from my Air 2 in 2020 to 11" Pro (A12Z), I went with 256 (the base was 128 then). Just few months back, I upgraded to M4 11" Pro and still went with the 256. Happy with it.

You didn’t mention how much storage you are using now and how that increased overtime.
Without that its a hard guess. But as long as u don’t plan to store many videos it’s hard to fill up 256GB

Air 2 maxes out at 128gb anyway so for sure, it's less than 256gb.

The 16GB RAM is a huge benefit of buying 1TB or 2TB. 12GB is a little on the low side if you're looking to take full advantage of your new iPad Pro. 2TB storage is highly recommended too, as is the cellular model for the incredible convenience of always-on data.

I have it and really like it (13" Pro). I have also owned the previous version and the Logitech Combo and this rev is really nice to use (though pricey).
Are you referring to the ipad m5 pro? Also would you rate the Logitech Combo over magic keyboard? The former is a late cheaper and lighter from what I understand..

Yes, I have the MKB for the M5 13" Pro. I far prefer it over the Logi as it has a smaller footprint and I like how the iPad is raised and brought forward over the end of the keypad area (closer to the user). I also didn't care for the case covering the iPad when detached from the keyboard - I use a Pitaka back cover on my iPad that is more comfortable to use and is also compatible with a lightweight magnetic folio f I don't want to use the keyboard. I don't see any significant weight difference between them. The MKB is pricier but worth it to me.

LOL did you even read about the OPs use case? 8 GB RAM would even be fine if can find a good discount on an M4!!! And not sure why the 2 TB recommendation to use 10% or less of it!

8GB isn't enough in this new agentic era of advanced computing.
12GB gives you no room for growth or future-proofing.
16GB will be sufficient for years.

The same applies to storage. We need more and more of it, so give yourself the maximum amount of freedom in future to really protect your investment.

I also think iPad Pro M6 will stretch to 24GB RAM for the highest end models, but those are probably more than a year out from launch.
