Will likely be getting an iPad Pro in the next couple weeks. Either a refurb 2018 or a new 2020 model. I’m getting the Pencil as well. Does the pencil scratch the screen? Should I invest in a glass protector?

I’ve had a 2018 Pro 12.9” for a little more than a year, but only recently got the Pencil. I used it without a screen protector for a few weeks, but didn’t like the feel or sound when I was note taking, so I ordered a matte finish protector from iCarez. I have to say that I should have gotten the screen protector much sooner, even without the Pencil, as the matte finish does a good job of hiding fingerprints and blocking reflections. And with the Pencil, it has a very natural paper-like feel. It’s also an inexpensive way of adding scratch protection to the screen. Highly recommend getting one.

Does it still feel smooth to the touch, like when you use your finger to control the screen?

I used Paperlike for a few weeks and ended up asking for a refund, mainly because of the reduced visual quality and a bunch of scratches on the screen protector. If you use the pencil a lot and would appreciate the resistance, it’s probably a good buy. I didn’t feel I used the pencil enough to make up for the trade offs.

I didn’t care much for paperlike 1. But paperlike 2 is a lot better in durability and visibility. It is rather expensive, but you do get two of them.

You’re not gonna find a screen protector that doesn’t hurt the visual quality of the iPad, and I’m sorry but if I’m looking at a big giant screen all day I want the visual quality to be at its best

just pay for Apple care if you’re worried

The Pencil doesn't scratch the screen. Paper-like screen protectors are good if you want a better writing feel, but should only be considered if you are going to use the Pencil a lot.

Don't matte screen protectors wear off the Pencil tip?
Some screen protectors do wear down from the tip. But I haven’t seen the other way around yet.
Others get “filled” with grease from your hands and become very slick. The nano-thingy-PaperLike 2 is much better. After 6 months it is still pretty much pristine. Every now and then I clean it with som glasses fluid and a glasses microfiber cloth.
also the “dithering” differs greatly between different screen protectors.

When I bought my iPad Pro and pencil in early 2019, someone in this forum recommended Amfilm on amazon. Their reasoning had something to do with resistance, because they really didn’t like paperlike. I’m currently using this protector, and have no issues using the pencil. It comes in a 2 or 3 pack

My 2018 iPad was used with an Apple Pencil for the last two years and never developed a single scratch or blemish as a result. I am in the camp of: Get AppleCare+ instead of a screen protector.

The pencil can never scratch the screen. Dirt stuck to the tip of the pencil however, can. I always make sure the pencil tip is as clean as possible.
