iPad Pro Story

About a year ago one of the doctors at the medical office I run got a iPad Pro for work. It was her daily driver and she loved it. Soon the other doctors found out and wanted one too. It was up to me to approve the purchase of iPad for the all the doctors in the office. I had to admit, while I was extremely apple savvy I never really looked at the iPads and after a very quick search on Apple’s website I laughed out loud and said no way. $1,000 starting price for a iPad? and the keyboard is another $300? No way. So in our monthly meeting I made a presentation and basically said the iPad is a giant waste of money and we’re got getting them. Why would anyone spend that kind of money for a giant phone? Everyone was disappointed, but I sold them on the logic and we moved on.

Now it’s about a year later and I’m writing this from my new iPad Pro 11inch with the Magic Keyboard. I know, how things have changed. It’s interesting how we write things off so quickly without actually knowing about what we are writing off. Turns out I was wrong, very wrong. The iPad Pro is easily Apple’s best computer. It’s the best of everything and for someone who wants it all. It’s so good I almost never used my MacBook Pro M3 Max 14 anymore. There’s really no reason to. My wife who has MacBook Air saw my setup tried it, and said I want that. I was like you just got the MacBook Air about a year ago it’s new, she didn’t care. She wanted it and traded it in for the iPad Pro w/ Magic Keyboard. She’s used it more in a month than a year of having the MacBook Air. For anyone who is considering a new computer I highly recommend they look at it, because it’s no longer just a giant iPhone. The ability to have a computer with a detachable gorgeous screen that is so powerful, thin and light is just to hard to pass up. Yes you’re paying a premium but it’s worth it.

This week I had a meeting with all the doctors and told them I have something to show them, I took out the iPad Pro from my bag and put it on my desk. Everyone looked confused. I said I’m approving the purchase for iPad Pro for everyone. Best of all, no crashing, no calls to IT, no how does this work, or can you help setup it up. I hope this helps anyone on the fence who was considering getting a new computer and didn’t know which way to go.

I can actually type faster and more accurately on my iPad Pro Magic Keyboard than I can on my MacBook Pro Keyboard. Just got a new M5 iPad Pro 13" with the new Magic Keyboard and I really love it. I had the older iPad Pro Magic Keyboard as well and this new one is pretty much better in every single way. I almost wish there was a 15" iPad Pro so it could do better with the windowed apps option and have more screen area to have multiple apps open.

I agree, the keyboard is amazing, but the price is $100 too expensive IMO. I disagree with the 15 inch option, unless you never use it like a tablet or for very short periods of time. It would be too heavy and too wide to type on when using it handheld.

About 6 years ago I trialled an iPad Pro for use in my organisation. I loved it and recommended we did not roll it out 😁

Why? It wasn’t the iPad - it was the users, some of them just could not handle the slightest change from a Windows laptop running Office. We moved to Google Suite from Office (previously to the iPad) and you’ve never seen some of the dumbest complaints… one guy (a VP) said he wanted to go back to Office as he kept deleting emails when resizing the browser as the bin icon was too close to the side of browser! Can you imagine him using an iPad?!?!

The iPP/Air and MKB is just incredible to use, just love its versatility. It can do whatever u want, multitask iOS apps like a giant iPhone or use it like a Desktop with full windowed multitasking on an external display, photo/video editing, gaming, drawing, anythings possible.

I just cannot believe some people have traded in theirs for a Macbook Neo, their money but a massive waste imo.

As with everything, it depends on your use case. There are apps I regularly use that are not available on an iPad, or things like MS Office that are weak compared to their desktop counterparts that make an iPad either a poor choice or not an option for some tasks. Until that changes, I'll use both for different things.

Wait a min… you traded in your iPad for a MacBook Neo? But you use both? I’m confused.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear on that. I have a Mac Studio in addition to 11" and 13" iPad Pros. I was trying to make the point that there are use cases where some would need a Mac over an iPad. I use different devices for tasks they are best suited for. If I could only have one device, right now it would have be a Mac.

It is very case dependent. I tried the IPP main device lifestyle for years but, in the end, the disappointments and barriers overcame the Pretty OLED touchscreen benefit. IPP is a nice device but it was more of a negative overall.

The battery life was also “bad” relative to my Mac and the “magic” keyboard isn’t magical enough to keep the IPP from topping over if it isn’t on a steady flat surface (or being babysat by the user).

Oh that's absolutely fine, I have both as well (iPP M4 MKB and MBA M5 15"), I'm just saying that some people have specifically traded in their iPad and MKB for a Macbook Neo as well as having to pay some cash on top, which is just nuts.

That is nuts.

I'd love to get down to a single device if I could.

Congrats. You didn't notice them in constant use in the Sick Bay?

(Congrats to Apple, too: today's version is quite a bit thinner/lighter! 🤣 )

Like OP, my iPad Pro 11” M4 with Magic Keyboard and Pencil Pro took a few months to grow on me, too.

I realize that the iPad Pro is one of those devices where its outward simplicity belies its immense capabilities. You get the highest end hardware like Tandem OLED and FaceID in an unbelievably thin chassis. The whole kit slips into my small sling. Today, I get to enjoy a convertible tablet/notebook in places where a MacBook could be too cumbersome or draws too much attention. And I don’t have to worry about a backpack. I think the iPad Pro, especially the 11”, is one of the most forward-looking computing setups that Apple offers.

For my next one many years from now, I’ll almost certainly get cellular and nanotexture because it makes the portability that much better.

Interesting… windows has been a nightmare for our office, they are happy to have a iPad OS. They all have iPhones so using it is intuitive. The only question I had was how do I charge the keyboard.

You had an audience who already wanted the iPad, I had an audience (not all granted) who were stubborn to learning new technology… the sad (read funny) part was this was a technology company (a SI).

It took me over a year and a half to explain to the leadership team the difference between mark up and gross margin % 😮‍💨 I couldn’t stomach the moans, with an iPad, of trying to find the print function!!
