Hi all

As you know I am currently on the verge of buying an iPad Pro (still not sure what size lol) one thing that is bugging me on the device is the front facing camera being on the side when using it in landscape mode... does this bother anyone in general use... and will Apple likely move it to top centre landscape in the future?

also what’s the likelihood we will see an updated IPP before the years through, is it worth waiting?

thanks

The camera on the side doesn’t bother me. It still works like it should.

If you want an iPad Pro (2020) get one. No need to wait and play the guessing game.

No matter what, new models will always be arriving at different times. Even if you were to wait until the next model is released, you will still be back to square one with another newer model being released.

Make an informed decision and don’t rely on strangers to point out the obvious.

It’s a slight annoyance for Face ID as occasionally your hand covers the cam, but there is an onscreen arrow which points to where the cam is located if it’s covered so nicely mitigated. For FaceTime etc, it makes nearly no difference.

I just got an 11” IPP coming from an iPad Air 3. Side camera is fine. FaceID unlocks quickly sideways, but you do have to be aware not to cover it up. With the thin bezels you just have to be cautious of how you hold it, took me a few days to adjust coming from a larger bezel device.

It does not bother me in terms of calls because I do not use iPad for that. Face ID? It just does not work. At least half of the time I have to enter my pass code as Face ID is just not working. I mean it works if you use the iPad as a laptop and you have a keyboard case and the iPad is angled. If you use it as a tablet it is so not working. I have no idea who approved that but it is just not useful at all. And Touch ID is way faster and more reliable than Face ID on a tablet.

I have learnt to accept that but every time I get asked, I just get pissed over this because this iPad Pro is expensive enough and this Face ID is PITA and it just does not work. Sorry but for my usage Face ID sucks for a tablet use.

FaceID is not a problem at all. I use my iPad Pro both with and without the magic keyboard case. It works fine.

I have both the 11" and 12.9" 2018 iPad Pro's. Like the others, I don't find the camera on the side in landscape to be any issue at all. I personally find the 12.9 too large for regular iPad-like usage. I originally upgraded my old 10.5" pro to the 12.9 but finding it too large for iPad stuff, I also picked up the 11. For me this is an ideal combination. The 12.9 sits on a Magic keyboard and gets used all day along side my MBP. The 11 with the folio keyboard and pencil goes everywhere with me along with my iPhone. If I was an artist or someone who did a lot of sketching etc with the pencil then I might learn to like the 12.9 for the larger drawing space. Regarding face id, it works flawlessly for me both for logging onto the iPad plus all my various apps.

Love my iPad Pro. Like you, I had difficulty about 11 or 12.9 inch. I got the 11 inch because I felt that it would better suit me and the way I use an iPad the majority of the time.

I just want to point something out. I had this problem and it bugged the hell out of me. Until I realised my face was TO CLOSE to the camera. Now I have realised this, it unlocks completely flawlessly every time. Try it. I bet it’s that.

Thanks! I will have this in mind. It might be the case as I have myopia and astigmatism. I mean I do wear glasses obviously because it is high enough prescription but I never get correction at 100 %. I might indeed put my face way too close to the iPad because I don't see properly.

Only way it bugs me is when I grip it in landscape and try to unlock.
All too often I find my digit has covered the camera.

are there new iPad pros coming out? feel like I am missing something...

Supposedly, theres a new iPad Pros that are coming out.. late this year or early next year. For which, I am looking forward to due to the upgraded Micro-LED display. Rumors have it that Apple wasn’t ready to implement the technology in current iPad Pros. I have the 2018 iPP and I didn’t even bother to upgrade this year since the 2020 models wasn’t a huge difference.

OK, I just wasn't sure because the apple store has the ipad Pro as "NEW"? which I find strange, because its not that new?? unless I am totally missing something..

It will not have Microled but supposedly mini-led. That's something different.

„New” signifies the newest product introduced/refreshed in a given product category. Hence the iPad Pro is still marked as “new” - no other new iPads since April ;)

You are correct, I get the two mixed up. Although, I wish Apple would put in a OLED display and call it a day, but it’s too expensive. And we all know Apple will pass on the cost to consumers.

It does throw me off a little bit especially when I’m in a Google meet for work. Everybody else is looking straightahead and I was like I’m looking off to the side LOL

I REALLY hate this on the iPad Pro. I love everything about it but having the camera on the side is the stupidest decision ever. I just don’t understand why they don’t move it to the top in landscape mode.

Yes same here, i use mostly in landscape and is a pain when holding. FID is average in dark in bed too.

Read my post above regarding faceID issues. I thought this at one point until I realised I was holding the iPad to close to my face. A little further a way and I haven’t had a single problem in the dark or at anytime with Face ID.

Same here. Early morning I start my 12.9 in a total dark room, no light other than the iPad itself. My face is about 18" from the camera and it validates as fast as I can swipe the screen.

it’s not a problem with my iPhone 11 Pro closer.

Personally I think its unlikely that we'll see new iPad Pro's before March - they're still struggling to fulfil orders of the currently Pro and unless thats because production has switched to the new one (which I think is unlikely) it gives them little reason to update it now.

I also think that with CoronaVirus having pushed things back a little for most launches this year it makes it unlikely we'll see them; there seems to be plenty of relatively solid info about a refreshed iPad Air / iPad (including packaging / leaflets) - we've had zero about iPad Pro's beyond possible wild speculation; I wouldn't wait.
