I have the 12.9 pro and a mini 4, I have multiple email accounts etc on the pro but just my iCloud personal account on the mini as I use it for reading and don't want to be distracted by work stuff. Bought a moleskine case for the pro as the Apple silicone case and cover are too flimsy and I had managed to slightly bend the pro at the bottom although it was easily straightened again I bought a more sturdy case.

I use my iPad Pro both at home and on my daily commute. Normally I catch a ferry to work, but recently the local transport authority reduced bus fares to a point where it is now considerably cheaper to catch a bus to work, so I thought I'd give it a try. I quickly found that the 12.9" is just too clumsy on the bus. On the ferry I can put it on a table, and there is plenty of space, but it is just to cramped on the bus. So I decided to try an old spare original iPad Mini for size, and it really works much better for me in that situation.
If I decide to continue on the bus I will definitely get an updated mini (because the performance of the original iPad mini is terrrible!) But for now I'm probably going back to the ferry because it's just a more enjoyable trip, but am also looking at moving to an apartment where I could walk to work.
There is nothing wrong with having multiple devices if you can afford them. While there is a lot of cross over in functionality, they are all optimised differently. Use what works for you.

I have a 12.9 iPad pro and a mini 4. I got the mini first, primarily for reading books and pdfs. It's wonderfully portable, and useful as a gps and for taking notes, reading e-mail, or following the Internet while on the run.

I bought the 12.9 iPad pro for work. I'm a teacher, and I use it as a virtual whiteboard while lecturing. I also use it as a notebook. It's also nice for watching movies (though I wouldn't have bought it for that alone).

I have a 12.9 iPP now, going to get a mini very soon. My 12.9 gets used ALL the time. It (mostly) replaces both my laptop and tv but in a super portable form factor (I still keep the laptop for heavier work). But I realized I need something quite a bit smaller in addition--particularly for ereading, taking notes during church service, and using casually around the house and less conspicuously in public in general. Also a second screen would be useful for reference when drawing on the 12.9. I think the mini should fill this role nicely. I'm fortunate that I can use my brother's old mini 3 as a trial. If it gets used enough, which I'm almost positive it will, I'll snatch up an updated mini (hopefully with Pencil support) when it comes out.

But will the mini pro actually happen, I am thinking a mini4 now but can't decide. The mini2 lags a lot now with ios9/10 and is frustrating but the difference of A7 to A8 is not huge so I am still on the fence!
The processor isn't the reason the mini 2 lags so much. It's the amount of RAM. The mini 4 performs so much better because it has twice as much RAM.

for me 9.7 pro and macbook pro is all I need at home. macbook is great for watching things on a bigger screen and the 9.7 is great for portability at home also.

I love reading all these posts from people using a mini along with a 12.9 Pro. That's exactly the route I'll be taking in a month or two, as I'm planning on trading my rMBP for a 12.9 Pro + Mac mini (as more of a server).

However, I already have a mini 4, which I absolutely love, but was debating how redundant the two iPads would be in reality. I see myself as using the Pro as a laptop replacement and my Mini, well, as I currently use it - reading books and PDFs, web browsing on the couch, for traveling and commuting on the train, etc. I hoped this combination would work, but it's nice to see that so many others have gone this route and loved it too.

If/when they come out with a mini pro, I would be all over that, though. The mini with Pencil support and a 256gb option would really be my ideal mobile device.
