Just wondering how some people use the new magic keyboard with the iPad Pro. The concern I have is that once you remove the iPad from the keyboard to say carry around the house etc..do you worry that the iPad will get scratched on the rear as there is no protection for it.

Also once the keyboard is removed, the iPad becomes very fragile as there is nothing really protecting it . I guess if you left the iPad connected to the keyboard all the time...does this not end up being a laptop to some degree..?

I received my iPad Pro 11 and Magic Keyboard yesterday from Amazon. I had the same concerns as you. I wanted to have something to protect my new iPad Pro not only around the house, but when I take it to work (minus the keyboard) etc.

I currently have a Torro leather case on my mini 5 and decided to get one for my new iPad as well. I wasn’t sure if I could bend the back of the case over to hold normally, so I also purchased an Apple smart case. The Torro case arrives tomorrow. I overspent on cases but, I wanted to be prepared because I don’t want this expensive iPad to get damaged. I also put an OMotion screen protector on it yesterday, as soon as I took it out of the box.

I would definitely get a case to use around the house, when you aren’t attached to the keyboard. I also suggest getting AppleCare+ for your iPad Pro so that the Magic Keyboard will be covered as well.

I bought a smart folio cover from Apple that I put on the iPad Pro when I take it out of the Magic Keyboard case.

All valid points.....the smart case will be useful. A lot to think about and plan for. I hope your setup works well for you. It is truly a magnificent piece of tech. Can I ask do you have a lap top as well and what will be the main uses of the iPad..?...

Seems to be the popular choice to cover all options. When would you likely take the iPad out of the keyboard case.?..and how are you using the iPad currently in your daily life.?..thanks for the reply.

I don’t have a laptop. I had a MacBook bought new last year from B&H and decided to be more mobile with a iPad and purchased the mini 5 cellular when it came out. I do have a Mac mini (2018 model) that was purchased for iTunes server use. I occasionally use it for iMazing and iTunes backups for my new SE and iPad. If I need to do something that either can‘t be done on the iPad or is much easier on a Mac, I use the Mac Mini server, which is rare.

As to iPad usage, it is used 99% of the time, versus my phone. Said usage includes Numbers spreadsheet and other various Centrify work usage, along with the typical email, perusing the internet, Audible, iBooks, Apple Music, viewing YouTube (anonymously) tech related video, writing stories and books etc. If I need to render video, the iPad Pro will allow me to do that on the go. I do plan on taking my iPad Pro out of the house regularly like I have my mini 5, albeit not every time I leave the house.

I prefer using the larger screen and mobility of the iPad, versus trying to rely on the iPhone all the time. I did the latter for years, and got tired of getting a larger and larger (and more expensive) iPhone brick to carry and try and fit in a pocket.

I seriously considered getting the new MacBook Air. The mobility and features of the powerhouse iPad Pro 11 made the decision a little easier.

By the way, if you do make the purchase for both items, make sure and buy a longer USB-C cable. The one provided by Apple is rather short, in my opinion. It makes charging much easier. I like to use my ipad while charging a lot of the time. And using the Apple provided cable makes that almost impossible from the comfy recliner. I purchased the longer cable last night and will be picking it up at the Apple store today, along with a new Apple Pencil.

I don't take my 12.9 IPP off the MK at all because I don't need to. Everything I use it for is in landscape mode, even games. Actually I'm enjoying playing games even more on the MK because of the angle and not having to hold it with one hand.

I have a skin on my iPad and magic keyboard. I rarely take the iPad off though in fairness. My iPad is purely used as a laptop replacement. As a 12.9 user I feel this is what it is more built to be than a tablet in your hand all the time

Agree as a lot of the others have said..a skin seems to be the best option to have or smart cover.

Thanks for the tip with the cable..I will look into it.
100% agree about the big phone issue. I am at that stage now and see no point in spending the $$ for a large phone that becomes cumbersome to carry around .

Its all about usage and being dedicated in your choice of which device to gravitate towards. A phone should basically be a phone with of course the basics of payments, quick email checks etc....but for browsing, work or anything extra, the iPad or laptop should be used.

I tried reading books on the iPad mini 5 but found to be too bright and compact. I thought the iPad 11 or 12 might allow a better experience as more realestate for my eyes to view. ( might just be peculiar to me.!)

Have you ever considered a Kindle E reader as they have the e ink screens with no glare.?

I had a Kindle years ago when it first released. I liked it. Back then, there was no iPad etc. I don’t believe I would buy one again, seeing how I have an iPad. I like reading on the iPad. If I spent most of my time outdoors, things might be different. I like having all my devices being able to communicate and share with one another. Can’t really do that with the Kindle world.

I find myself only taking the iPP off the MK when I’m stationary using it. Anytime I’m walking it around it’s attached the MK and closed up. I think it’s nice to hold something with a little more weight, reminds me to be careful with the valuable device (or devices I guess) I’m carrying.

I picked up a 3rd party folio cover from eBay for £20 and use that or the iPad without any cover if I’m using the pencil - its so nice being able go quickly remove it from the keyboard, do something and just snap it back on.

a skin for the back of the iPad is also an option if you want to keep it pristine.

Makes total sense...thats the benefit of Apple ecosystem. Did you have any regrets not getting the 12.9Ipad.?...

They are certainly valuable..!

I have no regrets keeping not getting the 12.9” iPad. If I were going to get that size, I would have gotten a 13” laptop and kept using the mini 5 as my main mobile device. Apart from the bulky size and extra weight, I have no real need for the extra screen real estate of the 12.9” iPad at home. Granted, the extra width for split screen would be a nice luxury. However, it would be a luxury that comes with a high price. If such a need were to arise, I can easily AirPlay to my 4K tv, which I have done on several occasions.

In my opinion, the 11” iPad Pro does an excellent of retaining my mobility and day to day use needs and wants. Having the 12.9”, as nice as it may be in the eyes of many here, would meant keeping the 12.9” iPad Pro at home and continuing to use the iPad mini which would have defeated the purpose of getting a bigger iPad.
