Take a look at this pic:
Notice the edge of the display next to the home button? It has no black edge from that angle, whilst the front camera edge of the display does.
This means that the display is not as close to the cover glass as I'd hoped it would be, like on the iPhone 4.

Still looks closer than the 1st gen iPad at least. They could have just made the glass a little thicker to make it more durable.

They made the glass thinner so that the iPad could, in turn, be thinner.

Looks about the same as my iPad. Hard to say, without getting the angle the same - it's also very difficult to see any gap with the black bezel.

There are two things here, making the glass thinner would make the iPad thinner, but also laminating (fusing/gluing) the screen to the glass would also make it thinner as there would be less of a gap between the glass that is wasted. Also they could just make the panel itself thinner as well to help.

I think mainly it is really the screen panel itself that has gotten thinner.

They may be saving that process for the third generation. Apple likes to progressively make things thinner. They'll have to take away something, and there's not much else that can give.

Since its not laminated, does that mean I can buy a white front housing if I ever decided to change the black one? I know you can buy replacement white front covers for the iPHONE 4, but there expense.
