iPad showing insufficient space?

Bit confusing (to me at least), this.

We have an elderly iPad Mini that the kids use. Whenever I go to sync, it comes up with an error saying there is insufficient space, but the coloured bar has always got substantially more free space - eg. it will say it can't sync (2Gb) and there is 4.8Gb free.

Is it goosed or am I doing something wrong?
