IPad stuck on iOS 11

My wife’s iPad believes that iOS 11 is the most recent version of iOS. And before you ask, yes, her iPad is on the supported device list for iOS 12.

Searching the internets just bring back results for people who had their upgrade fail during the process.

Any thoughts on how to force it to upgrade?

Reformat iPad as new and go through the update?

You didn't give much info to go on. How much space is left on the device?

Check Settings/General and see if any Profile is there. If so, remove the Profile.

Well, I finally got my hands on my wife's iPad to get some of the additional information you guys requested...and, magically, the iOS 12.1.4 update was waiting to be installed. I'm pretty sure the iPad knew that I had finally asked for help, haha.
