iPad sync problem (unkown error -54)

Hello guys

since quite some time I run into troubles with syncing my iPad (Mini 2, iOS 10.3.2) with my Mac Pro (macOS 10.12.5; iTunes 12.6.1.25). I can create local backups from my iPad, but I cannot sync the apps from iTunes to the iPad. I get the following error message:

It is worth noting that I have no such problems with my iPhone 5 (also on iOS 10.3.2) to synch on the very same machine.

Any ideas what is the cause and how to remedy?
