iPad typing multiple characters

I have recently had a problem with my iPad where it will intermittently type a character two or three times with one press on the screen. I have ensured that this isn’t just my fat fingers by typing very carefully and watching the issue happen.

It doesn’t happen all the time but maybe 30% of the time and is very frustrating. It also causes sticking or phantom touches when scrolling or zooming. Up to now I’ve tried cleaning the screen but that had no effect. Tried googling the issue but didn’t really find anything relevant.

Next step would be to do a factory reset. If then the issue persists to make a Genius Bar appointment.

Wondered if anyone had encountered the same issue or aware of potential causes as I’m at a loss. Hoping it is a simple resolution and not a display issue.

I'm wondering how old your iPad is (.i.e. which model) and which version of iOS you're running. Sometimes with an older iPad running a newer version of iOS you can run into situations where the processor simply can't keep up, and it will be problematic at processing user input.

The other thing to check, and perhaps adjust: under Settings > General > Accessibility > Keyboard you will find a control for Key Repeat (default is ON), and some parameters. On my iPad Air 2 running iOS 11.3 it appears that the defaults are Key Repeat Interval is 0.10 seconds, and Delay Until Repeat is 0.40 seconds. You might get relief by increasing the Delay Until Repeat parameter. Or simply turn Key Repeat off.

It’s an iPad Air 2 so not too old I don’t think. I have increased those settings to 0.3 and 0.6 to see if that makes a difference. Will turn off next. Thanks for the advice.
