Not really a bad technology....netflix uses its well. I mean, very MS based, but my (limited understanding) is that it isn't actually that bad.

Silverlight is pretty good, I agree. I really don't like Microsoft but from my experience (mainly with Netflix) Silverlight works really well and I like it much better than Flash.

I have dual core 2,4Ghz AMD machine and it's only a few years old. And no, there's no craps in my PC. This is a self-bulit, self-installed machine. You knows, unlike MAC, we can built a PC ourselves, right?

Funny my wife's most complaints about her cheap notebook (notebook, not even netbook) is always how slow it boots, how slow it wakes. And it's a well-maintained. Please, I'm using Windows for 20 years and always built system myself. Don't be Windows apologist and don't give me crap about it's slow because it's not "well-maintained". It's slow because that's the way it is.
What is "well-maintained" anyway? Defrags HDD every few days? Please..
If you have only IE in your machine then perhaps it can be freaking fast. Use it normally as a tool for a few months and it'll slow down significantly.

I'm sorry, but windows is slow because that's the way it is makes me wonder why you've been using windows since windows 3.0. If that's the way it is, why do you keep buying it? Windows is fine, i'm writing this on a p4 windows xp computer and it wakes from sleep in 2 seconds to the home screen. And yes, well maintained means hardware defrags every week.

Does this fact make you feel good every time you scan virus on your PC, or have to re-install Windows because it's infected? 😀

I've never had to reinstall Windows due to an infection. My point was that it's a myth that Mac's cannot get a virus. And as they gain more market share, the risk will increase. Just like Windows. I'd venture to guess that if Mac OS had over 80% of the market there would be a great need for AV protection.

How hard was it to upgrade to Win 7 Pro. Did you wipe it first, or just upgrade ? What about drivers and utilities ?

It blows chunks that a device marketed for corporate users would come with home edition.

I agree. It wasn't very hard. I made an ISO of my Windows 7 Ultimate using ImgBurn freeware and loaded it (and all the drivers available on the Asus site) onto a USB memory stick using Microsoft's bootable USB utility. The BIOS defaulted to the USB stick on its own and ran the installation. I chose not to reinstall a couple of Asus utilities to save space so the only thing "lost" was the free preloaded Artrage software which is pretty cool stuff but I'm not an artist.

Yes I did do a clean install.

ARTRAGE - I was happy with Windows Home Premium, but did notice the serial number is in the app.

Before you upgrade go into ArtRage and note the serial number,
and then after upgrading use it after downloading a copy from the publishers site, should work ?

Don't talk about Windows and being instant in the same sentence. I'm using Windows daily and it never be instant. Wait until you're using it a couple of months, it'll slow down to a crawl. It's always like that. New machine, very fast. A couple of months old, you almost didn't believe it's the same one anymore.

Same install on about 7 Wn7 PC's in my office and home, install is from when Win7 was released and they still start up and function as fast as the first day.

In regards to the Asus tablet, it looks pretty awesome and everything I dreamed of, but I won't personally buy it because of the battery life. I used to carry around a Fujitsu P1610, amazing little convertible notebook, but the battery life is what got to me. I swore off of tablets since then until the ipad came out. I think what I eventually want is an Android tablet with a true stylus input and long battery life. Or possibly one of the dual boot ones, Win7 and short battery life when I want it, or Android when I want less function but longer battery life.

Does better then 3 hours

Don't fall into the specs or reviews, I ran adobe CS5 for 4 hours on this the other night with bright display. It will get about 5 hours.

Also people are saying this is not as powerful compared to desktops this of course is a myth. It might not be the higest end laptop/desktop but it is a screamer with soild state hard drive, dual i5 processor and 4 gig memory. Adobe cs5 loads in 7 secs, restarts and powers up in 21 secs. Very powerful slate. I do not own a ipad so I can not say what is better, but any questions on this slate I will be more then happy to commet.

Mini hdmi output makes it nice on a big screen TV. I hooked in a Mini wireless keypad and watching netflix, hulu, video on the big screen is nice. No need for reviews, the word of mouth from owners are very happy with it. PRICE NEEDS TO COME DOWN 🙂

3 hour battery life!?

nooooooo thanks

(not to mention i have no desire to use windows on a tablet)

^^ Thanks, man. Good to hear and I feel better about my pre-order now. Gosh these things get sold out fast!!!

This Asus tablet looks really cool and I'm sure it's a great device (except for the battery life). There have been similar products on the market but they are all three times the price. BUT, I wouldn't call it an iPad alternative. They are meant to do different things. The iPad is basically a toy, for reading/watching content and running custom made apps. The Asus is a computer that runs windows programs.

Want to take out your tablet and page through some news on the bus? Get ready to wait a minute for it to start up, then another minute to open firefox. Yeah, it's only 2 minutes, but still a minute and fifty seconds longer than it would take with the iPad.

Obviously, the best solution is to get one of each.

No, it has SSD, and boots up faster than an AIR. A user in the Macbook Air forum posted his test. He has an Air, ASUS and a MBP 17. The ASUS lost to the MBP 17 with SSD, but beat the air.

It also runs full photoshop etc.

Has a 5 hour battery life when doing light work. #-3.5 doing heavy work.

I'm waiting for it to get back in stock at Fry's.

Gonna try and hackintosh it.

For a "full OS experience" I pull out the laptop or get on the desktop. More power, much cheaper.

I just bought the wife's daughter this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...cm_mmc=BFUS-_-32-_-N82E16834115860&nm_mc=BFUS

To replace the iMac desktop I had gotten her. (I took the desktop in exchange). I had bought it in Dec, so I only paid $599. Much more powerful, larger hard drive, faster graphics, and lower cost. Why do you think the Windows tablets or convertibles that have been made for the last ten years have been failures or had low sales numbers ?

Let's not forget that sucker also weighs 2.56 lb. I can see the complaining now on windowstabletrumors.com.

iOS and Android are not "full OS's" ? Or do you mean the

The only Thing you have is space Here.

The slate is much Powerful in Loading running APPS_ Also This sits At the base of my 55"- TV and use The blue Tooth key board for The ultimate Media TV-with its HDMi, I admit The "new" Price is high but it is Not that bad With the The Solid State speed I run CS5 Just fine Loads in 5-7 secs. don't be a hater it will Sell Nice 🙂

"Yes, but with a MacBook pro when it gets to be five to six years old and isn't quite working right, it can be brought to an Apple store, if the individual is of the proper gender and build, they can get it fixed and upgraded for free. Buy a cheap Dell or HP laptop and when you call you get India. (No offense to our Indian friends, but I am in the US and speak English). Buy a cheap WalMart laptop and what do you get? "

Absolute nonsense, Apple will never give you a free upgrade to a 5-6 year old machine unless there is a widespread manufacturing defect that they choose to acknowledge - such as the defective Nvidia cards.

Back to the topic of the 121, its pointless comparing it to the iPad since they are designed to do two very different things. For digital artists the 121 is exactly what many of us have been waiting for since it has enough grunt to run Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter, and uses a pressure sensitive Wacom stylus (an essential inclusion). It's certainly more portable than my MBP & Intuos tablet combo. The only disappointing aspect is the battery life.

It would be fantastic if Apple were to release an i5 tablet with Wacom support and great battery life, at the moment that doesn't seem likely :/

A sweet machine 4 Photoshop

iPad fad, EP121 Niche

Actually the best solution is iPad and a laptop...

I suggest learning how to use an iPad, before calling it a toy.

I have used MULTIPLE iPads of coworkers and friends.

I see GREAT POTENTIAL with productivity apps that have MOST of the functionality of my desktop apps. For my uses of a tablet device, the iPad is most definitely a TOY and little more.

I need something that can run a full OS (someone keeps asking for people to clarify the difference between a full OS and a desktop OS vs mobile/device OS) iPad iOS is NOT a full computer operating system. It is little more than a smart phone OS. Windows and Mac OS tablets such as ep121 and modbook Pro have a FULL COMPUTER operating system. Capable of loading any software package available on the market and utilizing it. Neither iOS or Android can do this. Unfortunately for me and 99% of people interested in a tablet device, the Modbook Pro by Axiotron is about $4500-$5k too expensive (as it is expected to cost around $5500-$6k when released).

Therefore, neither the iOS or Android tablets are worth their weight in water to me. When I need to edit photos for my photography business; do a site visit and take measurements, get on the the internet to show clients images of equipment I am recommending, and write notes about our meeting on a digital tablet- neither the iPad OR an Android tablet will do all this for me - I would have to either have a tablet AND a laptop AND a Wacom stylus tablet interface for these needs OR I can buy an Asus Eee Slate ep121 and do it ALL with one single device. Sure the battery life is very short relative to the iPad, SURE the device weighs 2.5x as much, sure I cannot get all the admittedly COOL apps for the iPad... BUT, I can get my WORK done and not be distracted by all the "cool apps" I cannot get on my Eee Slate.

I will readily admit as a media and "fun" device the Eee Slate does not compare to the iPad. I would LOVE to have a few of the productivity apps available for the iPad BUT not at the expense of my overall working experience.

The iPad is a fad, the Eee Slate is a niche market device. I fit that niche, I don't like fads, I'll get an Eee Slate LONG before I "pay" for an iPad. Now, if my company GIVES me one, or pays half the price of it, I'll take it willingly and enjoy it- because our IT people have designed custom apps that are ONLY available for the iPad to help us when meeting with clients.

I'm no Apple hater- I have an iPod touch I use like crazy, and am considering getting an iPhone when my Motorola Droid dies since they are FINALLY available on Verizon. I'd buy a Mac if I had time to learn the differences between it and Windows and could justify paying twice as much money for the same specs because they function more smoothly in the environment I'd be using it- photography/photo editing.

I also have both the EP121 and and iPad. I bought the slate because I need to take written notes with diagrams in meetings - a little hard to do on a laptop. I have been using windows slates for over a decade and love them. The handwriting conversion is amazing. OneNote is a killer app if you take any kind of notes.

On the other hand I also bought an iPad. Actually bought both within a couple of weeks of each other. The iPad is great for quick surfing, travel, and just sitting outside to check my email.

Love both products. Use both. For someone who needs a full-blown computer that will run all the programs available the slate is a great machine. Fast (yes it wakes from sleep pretty much instantly, hibernation - about 5 seconds). Comes with a stylus and with pinch-to-zoom the Windows ecosystem is not an issue.

I have one of these and an IPad 2.

The Asus is really a niche item, IMHO

some points:

1) touch is wonky in Windows, and the combination of pen and touch is a special kind of wonky. As a pen only device, it's just like any other Wacom tabletpc

2) It's a tabletpc, and is mostly useful if your an artist, doctor, or have some aversion to typing (something I could never understand ). note: there are other fields or specific areas where these are useful.

3) as a Tabletpc, it's excellent, as it weighs and costs much less that many other tabletpc's, without sacrificing features (except the dismal battery life.)

4) battery life is dismal

There's really no comparison to an iPad.

Your are correct on some points. The 121is a bit of a niche device. But that niche can be pretty big. As I posted earlier, I have used Windows slates for years. If I were a student again I would choose the 121 over the iPad for school. Especially if I were taking classes where my notes included formulas or drawings since the handwriting recognition is so good. Also, getting your documents on and off the slate is much easier than an iPad.

However, the iPad is a nice device. Especially because of the long battery life and portability. IMHO both are a bit of niche devices. Just depends on which niche fits you personally.

As for the Asus being "a pen only" device - I don't know what you mean by that. It comes with a bt keyboard and touch works just fine also. The stylus is just the icing on the cake for when you need to do writing/drawing (or in the case of my husband who seems to be incapable of using just his finger on ANY touch device).

Each to their own 🙂 I just don't like touch on Windows. Bugs me.

But I absolutely adore Wacom pen computers 🙂. And Windows 7 is brilliant as a pen-centric OS

Yeah, they aren't for everybody. I know a lot of folks for whom the iPad is just right. But for me I need more flexibility at times and the 121 is just right.

That being said I am really enjoying my iPad too. Luckily I'm in the position to be able to afford both. One of the benefits of being older I guess.

Ipad vs Asus EP121

The thing is with the standard EP121 is the speed. The stock SSD drive is like turtle. The good thing though is that you can replace the stock mSATA drive with another brand increasing speed and storage space. I found a review here http://www.storagereview.com/renice_x3_msata_ssd_review

I will turn your Asus EP121 in to a rocket.

I wish that there is just 1 device that can do exactly what I want it to do. In the office during meetings I love my EP121, but when on the road, checking emails, IM my friends my Ipad rules. Walking arround with 2 devices. Instead of dropping your papers over the office floor,.....

If the iPad suits your needs, you can not beat it,
long battery life, very smooth finger touch UI.

Still, many have been waiting for a quality Windows 7 tablet.
HP's slate is decent but the netbook Atom cpu
and smaller screen leave something to be desired.

Asus took it to the next level
with the EP121's larger 12" quality screen,
Wacom pen input, and a dual core i5 low voltage CPU,
HDMI out, USB ports and a SD slot.

I would not sell my iPad for and just use the 121,
just love the iPad's silence, long battery life and smooth touch browser.

But the EP121 certainly offers much more
and if needed plugging it in is an option 99% of the time
in my uses.

Just wanted to let iPad owners know my experiences with it.

I second your comments.
The ep 121 was the tablet I was waiting for.
You can actually do work on it, as opposed to just media consumption like the ipad or xoom, plus it has the touch screen and the Wacom pen.
The connectivity options and file management are like any serious computer.

I do a lot of photo editing and animation drawing, and this tablet is ideal for artists because the pen input is right on the screen like a Cintiq but it's a lot more convenient and comfortable.

This is the future of tablet computing, and it will leave the android and ios tablets way behind with their limited uses.
