iPad vs. Nook...lol

Not got a Nook, but a Sony PRS505... E-ink, nah, not convinced, too low contrast. I find it more of a strain to the eyes than LCD. And sloooowwwww...

I have a Nook....and I've ordered an Ipad

Well, you can actually have both devices. I use my Nook for E-Reading and it works great. I plan to do everything else on the iPad (Wi-Fi only model). I sold my older (3.5 years old) C2D MacBook to get the iPad. Can't wait to get it. It doesn't ship until 6/15 🙁

I have a Kindle and an iPad.

The kindle is FAR superior as an ebook reader. It's far lighter, easier to hold, far better screen for reading text (indoor and out).

They are very different products with different purposes and both are very good but the Kindle (and Nook, etc) are dedicated devices. The iPad can do a lot more but in order to do that loses out to the Kindle as an e-reader.

Yeah that all makes sense. The iPad for me isn't primarily a reading device, but I do like the bookstore and I use the amazon reader too. It's just fun to hear their argument when you say you have an iPad. And is it just me or did the booth go up at pretty much exactly the same time as the iPad release?

I saw the Nook booth at the NYC Union Square B&N last December back before the iPad was even announced.

I almost bought a nook around Christmas when they were announced, and then they had those horrible production issues, so I looked at a Kindle and I almost bought one but I ended up getting a Sony E Reader for free. I like the Sony but didn't like the Sony Ebook store and almost sold it to buy a Kindle. Then the iPad presentation was announced so I decided to wait.

Glad I did. I still have the Sony but I'm through trying cracking the DRM just to use it in Ibooks.

I love my kindle and actually found this forum through the Kindleboards... and to me this is apple & oranges (pun intended). I use my kindle to read and that is it. It is so light, even in a cover, I can easily hold it with one hand. I can carry it with me in my purse and sit out & read in bright sunlight on my porch... for hours! A charge will also last almost 2 weeks and I do not pay a penny extra for 3G service.

I just got my iPad and am enjoying it so far but even though it does so much more, it is so limited for me because of the size and weight. I also think there is an awkwardness about it, you do not have with a laptop, that though it is larger, is much easier design wise to use.

I do think I will get use to it and just have to find the right set up (case, pillow...) and I think I will get a lot of use out of it. However, I don't foresee taking it with me on a daily basis, where as rarely go anywhere without my Kindle.

Bet you could sell it on ebay, but personally I would rather read on my PRS505 than my ipad for casual novel reading. After handing the uipad for a while the Sony reader feels so good in the hand.

They had some on display at Best Buy. I get the whole e-ink thing now, but I did not quite like the overall feel of the nook. It is nice to actually getit hands on, I will never consider a Kindle because I have yet to see or hold one. Touching an ipad was what sold me.

You will soon be able to see and hold a Kindle. Target Stores will be selling them real soon. That's over 1,700 physical outlet opportunities.

What is missing with Kindle, Nook, and Kobo readers is that you are captive to Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and Borders respectively thus have no choices. With the iPad you can buy books and read them from all those outlets plus the Apple iBooks store. I've found it necessary to buy from both Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble to get the book I wanted to read on the iPad (or electronically for that matter). I would have been out of luck with the Nook or Kindle. I can sync and load Barnes & Noble and iBooks on both my iPad and my wife's iPad. No such luck with Amazon.com. Thus, Amazon.com is now the loser and last choice in e-book buying consideration.

BTW, I never read on the beach under the sun but have found it to be no problem to read outdoors on my shaded patio with the iPad. EVERY NIGHT I do read in bed with the lights out. Try that with e-ink. Eyestrain? Another canard that should have gone away with the CRT. Does anyone hover over an e-ink computer all day? Weight? The Apple case makes a great self-support on my lap or even chest in bed. I go with history. If I wanted lightweight and smaller I could have stayed with my iPhone. Color has eventually wiped out black and white in every media type. This will be no different.

Hey Davy

As far as Kindles, that is not quite correct. You can buy from other sources and you can also download from the free sources for books. You just have to transfer them from your computer. I get books from feed books all the time.
