iPad Ipad vs notebook

I use my ipad most of the time because its light and easier to hold. Plus, I'm usually just checking my mail, browsing, or using iMessage. If I need to do anything else I go straight to my MBP.

Do people keep their iPads on like an iPhone or turn it off when it's unused?

Yep. Always on apart from when I turn it off once a month just as a routine.
