Is an original iPad running iOS 5.1.1 still usable for web browsing?

I ask as my 92 year old grandfather wants to get on the web for online grocery shopping.

We have an old iPad in the family for him to try out but I don't have it here to test it on the grocery websites he'll be using.

There is a large difference between the iPad 1 and 3. The iPad 1 will work, but it will be prone to crashing and have longer loading times. It is also very insecure and not a good device to use for any kind of secure access.

Thanks, good to know most websites will at least load OK.

I hear you. I'm hoping an original iPad will be OK for him to learn iOS on. He's going to be slow at using it so slow UI hopefully won't be too big a deal.
Crashing of course is more of a potential frustration.

If he takes to it I'll look at a refurb iPad Air as they seem to be good value at the moment.

16GB iPad is fine and cheap I doubt your grandpa will store pictures or music at all. No need to add apps? :apple:

the UI runs pretty smooth on an ipad 1 with ios 5.1. it's just he 256mb of ram that often leads to safari crashing. don't know what happened there - it was working fine, when ios 5 came out.

you can save ram with a few tricks (turn off spotlight, no multitasking gestures, no 3g,...) but this only makes it marginally better.
