Hi all. Have sent a few days googling and thought I’d consult the brains trust :)

I have a HP touchscreen monitor.
I’m wanting to use this to control my iPad.
I know it’s not supported natively… however anyone found a solution?

TIA

Which iPad model? Which iPadOS version? Which monitor model?

In any case: according to their manuals most HP monitors with touch functionality (like e.g. the HP E24t G4 FHD) need a video- AND USB-connection to enable/use it.
On Windows there is an automatic driver installation when connecting these monitors, IDK whether this is just for the video part (monitor profile etc.) or also required for the touch functionality.

Because you need a dongle/hub anyway to connect iPad and monitor, what happens when you additionally to video connect them with the USB-cable which came with the monitor (assuming you have access to a hub like e.g. this)?

Huh? iPad is already controlled by touch.

Hey Zazoh,
i don't want to use the ipad, i want to use the large monitor to control it (think of it like a large 'control panel')

wanting to use on either an ipad pro 3rd gen, or ipad air2... either can be fine for me....
Monitor is a hP E24tg4

I've tried with a Hub, USBc dock, cable, splitter... everything... i've googled quite a bit and no solution there either...

Per the User Guide iPad will work with a USB mouse. I know in the past some touch screen displays would connect to the computer as a virtual “mouse” so in theory this COULD work, just depends on how well the display mimics a mouse. Newer displays use a software driver on the computer to interpret touch input because it’s more precise, and might support multi-touch.

I’d reach out to HP about it - possibly they could develop an iPadOS app to support that, not sure.

I am researching this problem as an ALS caregiver that needs a larger touchscreen, maybe 24" to run my iPad. I plan to wall mount the display. I've seen windows based touch screen solutions and raspberry pi touch screen solutions, but am still researching how to match an external touch screen to my iPad. Having reached out to Apple Support, I suspect that the 10th generation iPad is a minimum requirement. I keenly hope you all will post updates if you learn of an off-the-shelf solution, ideally affordable.

Macs have a software driver solution, but never heard of one for iPads.

oh wow! i'll try this... do you know when i can download from?

thanks

A

First check with your monitor manufacturer for drivers. I think you mentioned HP. Many, like ViewSonic, provide drivers for Mac for free.

But for those that don't, try here: https://www.touch-base.com/ (they can be a little pricey, though)

Often, those that are free from the manufacturer, they are actually repackaged from Touchbase.

not supported by HP... and no luck getting the touch-base to work on previous attempts

The touch-base drivers are intended to support touchscreens that are otherwise not available/incompatible for the supported operating systems. Though... iOS is NOT on their supported list of operating systems.

I do recall many years ago that there were a couple hardware solutions that claimed to control an iPad from a external touchscreen, but don't think they ever became mainstream.

If you can wait, there is the new iPad fold 18.8" which will be available in 2026, so this "bigger iPad" size might get you out of trouble.

Hahaha. I will believe this just like I will believe that Boeing will finally get the 737 Max 7 certified. lol.
