from what i read the 128GB model was requested by companies as a condition of them buying ipads for corporate use. lots of files like blueprints use a lot of storage and no one wants to pay the carrier fees to download from the cloud

Correct me if I'm wrong, but here is a little history lesson that may or may not prove relevant:

I think the only time Apple has ever upgraded storage for an iOS device part-way through the upgrade cycle was the original iPhone and the iPad 4. The original iPhone came in 4/8GB sizes. On February 5, 2008 the original iPhone was upgraded to a new 16GB capacity option. Later that same year, they came out with the iPhone 3g that only came in 8/16GB sizes—dropping the 4GB model altogether in favor of the larger capacity offering.

Now this year we have the iPad 4 get a 128GB capacity on January 29th. That's FOUR models of iPads, across multiple versions for WIFI and various cellular radios. To add further complexity, the iPad 5 is expected to come in Gold, Silver and Space Gray. So that's an additional color option. Given the precedent of the original iPhone and Tim Cook's penchant for keeping a tight supply chain I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a 32/64/128GB lineup. Not to mention that competition is finally starting to heat up a little bit.

But perhaps that is just wishful thinking since I'm getting a 128GB no matter how much the darn thing costs! My 32GB iPad 2 is always running low on space.

So wait, you want Apple to give up a minimum of $90 of pure profit for everyone wanting to upgrade from the woefully pathetic 16Gigs?

Hahahahahhahaha

I expect 32Gigs to be the standard around the iPad 10 release.

if the iphone 5s stuck with 16/32/64, i'm thinking the ipad might as well.

The iPhone and iPad serve very different use cases. I can think of a single instance where I saw someone watching a movie (not just short video clips like YouTube) on an iPhone. On the other hand I see people watching feature length films on the iPad all the time. Storing those requires more space.

Is it very possible we see 32GB as the base. The fact that the 5s has a 16GB base model will have zero bearing on what happens with the iPad IMO.

Now hold on, the iPhone is a phone and not meant for heavy work loads like the Mac and the iPad. For a phone, 16gb is too low IMO. (And I have the average number of photos and music.) Not only do I think they'll put 32 GB on the iPad, I think it's necessary, as the iPad is starting to grow towards the Mac.

i agree that 16 is a bit small, but i think a lot of people get by fine in using the ipad as a web browser with light use of apps. for others, there're the 32/64/128 models (for more money) to get them by. all i'm saying is that the base configurations for both ipad and iphone have always been the same, and i'm betting the pattern will continue this year.

The 16GB is the most popular because it is the cheapest base model. If 32GB was the base and cost $499, then this will be the most popular. It has nothing to do with the size and more to do with being the base model that makes it the most popular.

Thats exactly what I said

You're more likely to use your phone as an iPod than you are the iPad so it makes sense for the phone to have big capacity.

I'm in the same boat as a previous commenter. I plan on getting whatever the second tier is. I'd be really happy if that was 64gbs but I'm resigned to the 32 that my current Ipad 2 is that I'll be replacing. I can't imagine an iPad having less than 32gbs of storage as I'm always near maxed out and that's with hardly any video content, just photos, apps, and comics.

No chance. At least not until they find some other forms of cost savings to protect their precious profit margin of about $99 for that extra 16 gb.
