Two new features of iPadOS 13.x that had constantly been mentioned during the beta phase were desktop browsing and SMB access.
Both had been disappointments.
I thought that desktop browsing would use a more robust rendering engine so that web pages that didn't work on iOS 12.4.x would load correctly on iPadOS 13.1.
Unfortunately this is not the case.
It loads web pages the same way as iOS 12.x did when forced to load the desktop version of a page with the needed two steps process.
Only directly.
Web pages that didn't load on iOS 12.x also fail on iPadOS 13.1.
I don’t mention the pages because all require login. Login is fine but the pages fail with some actions.
Another frustration was SMB support.
I thought I would be able to access the pen drive connected to the USB port of my AirPort Extreme. Impossible
I'll continue to use third party apps that support this since long ago.

Files won’t connect to my pen drive connected to my Asus router. Of course, VLC can do it, as it’s always done.

It’s truly embarrassing that the Files app can’t connect to a shared drive on Apple’s own brand of routers. How pathetic for a trillion-dollar company.

Scrolling through Google reviews of restaurants etc. doesn’t work on the desktop pages, but the mobile pages allow scrolling. I guess Apple didn’t implement a real desktop browsing mode, only a hybrid that works on sites who allow you to use their desktop website.

The proof that Safari on iPadOS 13.x isn’t a real desktop browser is in the Settings app. For Safari there is a setting that by default is on to show desktop pages. If you disable it you get mobile pages as ever.
There is a long way for the iPad to replace a real computer. A lot of pages fail, specially when it comes to downloads.

I have to say I use my iPad Pro 99% of the time, it’s had very few issues with any site. Curiously the “always request desktop site” feature gave me problems trying to log into my ATT account. The password entry would always fail. I used the “request mobile site” option and it worked right away. There are a lot of issues with iOS 13 still, it’s still primarily a beta level OS. But using Safari, other than syncing, has been very good and I only resort to my MacBook Pro once a week when I want to backup my devices to iTunes. My other use for the laptop was for sites that didn’t function properly on mobile devices but I haven’t run into one, on my iPad, in quite a while. When my laptop eventually fails I would probably not need to replace it except for backups and restores when necessary. It feels clumsy to me now when I use it.
