"People don't want a touch screen laptop."

But here's a touchscreen tablet with a laptop class CPU, soon to be the same CPU we use in our actual laptops, and a detachable keyboard, trackpad and mouse support, and a bunch of features from our desktop OS including multitasking and widgets and spotlight search and a file system browser and USB support and apps like Adobe and Microsoft Office and...

These two things are both correct; an iPad with its non-handicapped UI/X for touch input is in no way comparable to a 'laptop with a touch screen'.

With Universal Search on the iPad, can you initiate it from within an app without a keyboard or did I just get my hopes up!? If so what is the gesture?

I believe Apple's answer (not mine, so don't @ me) would be that iPad is a new kind of a device, not a laptop, and when you attach it to a trackpad and keyboard, you don't need to use touch - it's there for when you use it as a tablet. In a way, they could claim people still don't want a touch screen laptop, the touch is here for the tablet mode.

There is some truth to that, when I have my trackpad and keyboard attached to the iPad - I don't use touch. Still, not saying that a touch laptop is a bad idea.

When I first got my Apple Pencil, I naively thought that what they call SCRIBBLE now would already be a feature. I never imagined they would give you a pencil that you would have to put away whenever you wished to actually write something. So now, it's finally there. This is truly the feature I'm most excited about.
